Winner of the Best International Student Cities 2017

In the fifth edition of the QS Best Student Cities index, Montréal was named as the world’s best city for international students – bringing an end to Paris’ four-year reign at the top! Multicultural, bilingual, student-centered and inclusive, Canada’s “cultural capital” performs well in all six categories of the QS Best Student Cities index – including the new Student View category, which is based on a global survey of students and graduates.

Top 10 Best International Student Cities 2017

To be considered for inclusion, each city must have a population of over 250,000, and be home to at least two universities featured in the most recent QS World University Rankings. The top 10 QS Best International Student Cities 2017 are as follows:

  1. Montreal (Canada)
  2. Paris (France)
  3. London (United Kingdom)
  4. Seoul (South Korea)
  5. Melbourne (Australia)
  6. Berlin (Germany)
  7. Tokyo (Japan)
  8. Boston (United States)
  9. Munich (Germany)
  10. Vancouver (Canada)

Elsewhere, Montréal’s rise to the top sets a general national pattern, with four out of five featured Canadian cities improving their positions this year. Vancouver places 10th, Toronto 11th, Ottawa 26th and Quebec 72nd. Similarly, the German cities of Berlin and Munich improved on their previous ranking. The fall in the value of the currency makes UK student cities more affordable for international students, whilst affordability dampened the performance of Australian cities, which have previously tended to dominate the index.

Sub-Saharan Africa has one representative in the top 100 QS Best Student Cities index. Johannesburg, South Africa is the sole representative from the region coming in at number 84.
