Overall Job Purpose

  • To be responsible for designing, supporting, monitoring and maintaining WAN and LAN networks across KML Mine and supporting sites, including other Zambian regional offices
  • Ensure operational/technical support and monitoring for facilities hosting network infrastructure across all areas is in place
  • Interacting with internal customers as well as various other technology vendors or groups in planning works

Specific Job Responsibility

  • Administer and support network systems, including designing, building, tuning, backup and recovery
  • Provide technical consultation in the design and development of infrastructure network systems to ensure a robust and stable environment.
  • Participate in formulating and implementing IT standards and policies to support the operational environment
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation to facilitate consistency and quality of installations, systems upgrades and recovery/ repair.
  • Develop and implement processes to assist with problem management, change management and performance monitoring to support effective operational management
  • Perform any other duties assigned by the supervisor and troubleshoot issues as they arise, including ad-hoc desktop or printer support as required

Job Specific Competencies

  • Troubleshooting & administration of routers, switches, OLT, ONU together with supervisor
  • To complete wireless site surveys for both Point to Point links and Wireless LAN implementations
  • Supervise optical fibre splicing, dome joint installations, and testing/reporting of completed works
  • Maintain Ethernet and Fibre Optic structured cabling, infrastructure labelling and network documentation to standard required
  • Maintain and/or troubleshoot Unifi AP and Unifi Air Fibre including channel optimization, radio interference and air optimization
  • Ensure that all work is captured using the ticketing system
  • Network daily health checks
  • Provide support for network infrastructure in an on-call rotation
  • Adhering to and implementing Group ICT standards and policies

Experience Required To Perform In This Job

The Network Engineer will require knowledge, skills and experience in the following areas:

  • Strong Cisco networking skills in routing & switching, wireless and voice
  • VLAN and spanning tree implementations
  • Competent in subnetting and VLSM
  • Understanding of how VOIP solutions integrate with the LAN
  • Diagnosing and troubleshooting issues in an IPv4 environment including fault finding possible TCP port issues at edge firewalls and escalating accordingly
  • Competent in copper cable terminations and fibre optic splicing
  • Excellent networking documentation skills aligned to FQM requirements
  • Team lead experience with skills to plan and develop network infrastructure
  • Extensive networking knowledge and at least 5 years’ experience, preferably within an African mining environment

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent
  • CCNA (required) and CCNP (preferable)
  • Cisco Wireless experience or certification (preferable)
  • Cisco Unified Communications experience or certification (preferable)
  • FOA Certified (required)
