Miracle Corners – Zambia (MCZ): Program Officer Position

GENERAL BACKGROUND

MCW (Miracle Corners of the World) is a non-profit organization founded in 1999 with the vision “Communities throughout the world achieve greater levels of education, improved health and increase economic security” and mission to address communities pressing needs by empowering current leaders and readying leaders of tomorrow. Based in New York, with partner organizations in Africa (Zambia, Sierra Leone, Tanzania and Rwanda), MCW offers the following: Community Development, Oral Health Care and Young Leaders programs. MCW also supports Partner Initiatives, including Human Rights and Pediatric AIDS Treatment for Africa (PATA).

In keeping with MCW mission which is to address communities’ pressing needs by empowering current leaders and readying leaders of tomorrow, Miracle Corners Zambia (MCZ) was born in 2009 in response to the local community needs to develop relevant skills and capacity toward social and economic transformation. Over the last couple of years, MCZ has been offering Key Technical Vocational and Education Training Programs in the areas of ICT and Tailoring, Literacy programs for both children and adults as well as youth programs.

GENERAL ROLE DESCRIPTION

The MC-Z Program Officer will work closely with the MC-Z Country Manager to oversee the day-to-day running of the vocational and youth programs being implemented at the center in Chanyanya. The Program officer will fulfil the following roles:

  • Designing programs – Develop concept notes, proposals and project plans
  • Monitoring and Reporting – Oversees project implementation and reports against objectives
  • Ensuring Quality Assurance – Ensures MC-Z vocational programs are in line with TEVETA requirements and curriculum.
  • Ensuring learning and teaching at MC-Z complies with teaching and learning methodologies set by national policies and guidelines
  • Ensuring vocational trainers receive the required technical support

SPECIFIC ROLE DESCRIPTION 

Instructional Leadership

  1. Assists in the establishment of the Organization goals and objectives
  2. Provides leadership in planning, implementing and evaluating instructional programs.
  3. Provides leadership in teaching techniques, innovation and class organization.
  4. Manage the programs as required.

  Staff Personnel Management

  1. Assists in the process of interviewing, evaluating, and selecting vocational trainers
  2. Assists in the determination of vocational trainer’s needs.
  3. Assists in working with individual trainers ‘needs.

Curriculum Development

  1. Shall assist in the direction, supervision, and evaluation of instructional programs.
  2. Assists in the maintenance and improvement of the quality of the instructional program by being responsible for trainer implementation of the curriculum.
  3. Assists in providing the leadership necessary to ensure that each trainer is following the curriculum
  4. Coordinate and facilitate the development of the master timetable schedules

 Students’ Discipline

  1. Assists in the planning and implementing of programs for the health, safety and welfare of students.
  2. Supervises extra and co-curricular activities
  3. Enforces and establishes disciplinary procedures in line with the Center’ vision and mission which allows students to realize their mistakes and growth in discipline;

Youth programs

  1. Work with the country director on all youth programs and activities
  2. Planning, budgeting and conducting programs focused on specific needs of young people
  3. Ensure engagement and participation of the youths in all the programs being implemented in the community by MC-Z
  4. Organizing and supervising youth group activities including sports, recreations, debates.
  5. Meeting with young people to identify, discuss and design interventions on the issues affecting them.
  6. Writing quarterly and annual reports and submit to the country manager
  7. Liaising and working with stake holders and other like-minded organizations.
  8. Promoting young people’s interests

Staff Professional Growth 

  1. Participates in professional growth activities.
  2. Participates in decision making, planning and evaluation of the teaching staff
  3. Other duties as assigned by the Country Manager

Requirements:

Required Professional and Educational Qualities

  1. At least a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from an accredited higher learning institution.
  2. Minimum of 5 years’ experience in the education sector with at least 3 years’ experience in educational management and youth programs.
  3. Demonstrate a reasonable level of computer literacy.

Required Personal Qualities

  1. Be an enthusiastic visionary, an encourager, and a self-starter with a high energy level.
  2. Demonstrate sensitivity towards staff, youths and community members and have the ability to interact effectively with them.
  3. Understand the importance of discernment, discretion, and confidentiality in the operation of the Organization
  4. Ability to collaborate with local government agencies
  5. Ability to work with the youths. 

Special knowledge

  • Working knowledge of vocational programs and instruction
  • Ability to coordinate trainers and students
  • Strong organizational, communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills
  • Proven ability and willingness to work independently, prioritize and hold oneself accountable;
  • Strong mastery of Google Drive and Microsoft Office, particularly Word and Excel;
  • Fluency in English Bemba and Nyanja
  • This position is based in Chanyanya, Kafue.
