Who was Neil Armstrong?
Neil Alden Armstrong was an American astronaut and the first person to walk on the Moon. Born in Ohio USA on 5th August 1930, Armstrong went on to become an aerospace engineer, naval aviator, test pilot, astronaut and university professor.
Armstrong is most famous for his role as mission commander of the Apollo 11 moon landing in 1969. On this mission, Armstrong descended to the lunar surface and became the 1st person ever to walk on the moon.
Armstrong died in Cincinnati, Ohio, on 25th August 2012, at the age of 82. His extraordinary achievements mean that his legacy will never be forgotten.
