The QS World University Rankings by Subject 2016 highlights the world’s top universities in a range of popular subject areas, covering 42 subjects as of 2016. The rankings are based on academic reputation, employer reputation and research impact. The rankings help prospective students identify leading universities in their chosen field of study.
Summary of World University Rankings by Subject 2016
The two big US universities, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Harvard University, dominate the World University Rankings in 2016, coming 1st 24 of the 42 subjects ranked. UK universities come 1st in a further 8 subjects. Outside of the US and UK, top spots are claimed by the Netherlands’ Wageningen University (ranked 1st for agriculture & forestry), Switzerland’s ETH Zurich (1st for earth & marine sciences) and the University of Hong Kong (1st for dentistry).
Elsewhere in the world there are a number of universities who have multiple subjects ranked in the top 10. These universities include:
- National University of Singapore – 13 subjects
- ETH Zurich, Switzerland – 11 subjects
- University of Hong Kong – 6 subjects
- University of Tokyo, Japan – 5 subjects
- Australian National University – 4 subjects
- Karolinska Institutet, Sweden – 4 subjects
- Delft University of Technology, The Netherlands – 3 subjects
- Tsinghua University, China – 3 subjects
