5 jobs that didn’t exist a decade ago

What job were you doing in 2003? We bet that none of you were doing any of the 5 jobs mentioned below – the reason being that none of these jobs existed 10 years ago! It’s interesting to look back and see what new jobs have been created since 2003. Of course, many new jobs and opportunities have been created due to technological developments but how many of you would have foreseen these developments in 2003?

1. Mobile App Designer

The Mobile App market only started in 2008 so there was no need for mobile app designers before this time. Since 2008, there has been a dramatic growth in the size of the mobile app market. It is estimated that the mobile app market is now valued at over $24 billion (over ZMW 127 billion) worldwide and is increasing dramatically as the number of mobile phone users and apps increases. Mobile Apps are being developed to for all manner of uses from social networking, entertainment, information and much more.

2. Social Media Manager

Social media usage has been growing dramatically since Facebook was first launched in 2003. Billions of people worldwide now use social media sites such as Facebook, Google+, LinkedIn and Twitter to communicate and share information. As social media sites have become ubiquitous more and more organisations have appointed Social Media Managers to manage their social media presence.

3. President of South Sudan

South Sudan only became an independent state on 9 July 2011 so the job of President of South Sudan was certainly not one that existed in 2003. Other new states that have been formed since 2003 include Montenegro, Serbia and Kosovo.

4. Twenty20 Cricketer

Cricket is one of the most popular sports in Southern Africa but the Twenty20 game only started in 2003. The new version of the game lasts just a couple of hours compared to up to 5 days for a test match! Twenty20 has proved a hit with players, spectators and sponsors around the world – a crowd of over 84,000 watched the game between Australia and India in 2008.  The highest paid players can now earn over $1.5 million (over ZMW 8 million) for just a 6 week competition!

5. Sangha Trinational World Heritage Site Manager

Situated in the north-western Congo Basin, where Cameroon, Central African Republic and Congo meet, the Sangha Trianational World Heritage site encompasses three contiguous national parks. It was declared a World Heritage site in 2012. Much of the site is unaffected by human activity and features a wide range of humid tropical forest ecosystems with rich flora and fauna, including Nile crocodiles and Goliath Tigerfish, a large predator. Sangha is home to considerable populations of forest elephants, critically endangered western lowland gorilla, and endangered chimpanzee. The site’s environment has preserved the continuation of ecological and evolutionary processes on a huge scale and great biodiversity, including many endangered animal species.
