Lumwana Mining Company Limited (LMC)

Reporting to: Drilling Supervisor

Lumwana Mining Company Limited (LMC), a copper mining company owned by Barrick Gold Corporation is situated in the North Western region of Zambia, some 300 km west of the Zambian Copperbelt and 95 km south west of the provincial capital of Solwezi. The mine is a multi-pit, multi staged operation mining approximately 100MT of ore and waste per annum and producing copper concentrates containing an average of 120,000 tonnes of copper metal per year over a twenty (20) year mine life, making Lumwana the largest single open cut copper mine in Africa. The Company is now looking for experienced and qualified individuals to be considered for the position of Drillers.

Role Summary

Reporting to the Supervisor – Drill and Blast, you will be responsible for the drilling of blast holes on a scheduled shift and to maximize the hour to hour drilling operations in a safe efficient manner. Your duties will include but not limited to the following:

Responsibilities

  • Identifying the risks in their work area and using the correct controls.
  • Reporting to the Supervisor immediately any actual or potential unsafe conditions or activities, mishaps, incidents, accidents, injuries or illnesses in the workplace.
  • Using personal protective clothing or equipment as provided.
  • Reporting any defective or damaged personal protective clothing, equipment, or gear, and returning the item to the Supervisor for replacement or repair.
  • Complying with instructions given pertaining to the use of personal protective clothing, equipment or gear or any matter in relation to health and safety
  • Not interfering with anything that has been provided in the interest of health and safety in the workplace.
  • Not engaging in any duties that require a certificate or written authorisation unless the relevant certificate or permit is held.
  • Not attempting any task unless they are trained, capable and competent to safely perform the task.
  • Cooperating fully with any rehabilitation program to assist recovery from injury or illness for themselves or any other person.
  • Ensuring environmental risks of tasks are assessed and mitigated.

Experience & Qualifications

  • Grade Twelve Certificate (12)
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in drilling on blast hole rigs in the open pit mining industry
  • Demonstrated ability in one or more of the following: D25K, D45K, DR 560 Pantera, DML, T50
  • Demonstrated ability to drill holes accurately to required depth and hole angle
  • Ability to interpret and implement drilling plans and ensure quality control is maintained throughout the drilling process
  • Proven ability to deliver results and act as a change agent.
  • Demonstrated ability to improve team safety awareness.
  • Demonstrated application of continuous improvement ideas.
