Under the overall guidance of the Project Leader and Manager, the Aquaculture Scientist will help implement together with Musika and private sector partners the smallholder fish farmer component of the Aquaculture Technical, Vocational, and Entrepreneurship Training for Improved Private Sector and Smallholder Skills project: enhancing the technical education, vocational, and entrepreneurship skills of rural women, men, and youth smallholder commercial fish farmers and increasing their linkages to input/output markets and entrepreneurship opportunities via private sector extension support and services delivery.
The Aquaculture Scientist will also provide significant support to the other component of the project: upgrading the fisheries/aquaculture curriculum (long- and short-term courses), training tools, online training platforms, and internship programs of NRDC. The Aquaculture Scientist will be based in Lusaka or Kasama (will be determined), Northern Province at the Musika Provincial Office and carry out all the sub-activities with Musika. The Aquaculture Scientist will provide aquaculture technical guidance to Musika and ensure strong links are made with private sector companies working in and outside of the northern region to ensure project activities are successful. Together with the Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning (M&E&L) Coordinator, the Aquaculture Scientist will monitor progress of all sub-activities and submit monthly reports to the Project Manager. The Aquaculture Scientist will also lead the development of scientific publications under this project component.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist Musika in the design and implementation of the six sub-activities under the smallholder fish farmer component, including:
- Assessment of market actors
- Commercially-oriented, gender- and youth-responsive market research
- Early stage investment support to the private sector
- Increasing the capacity of private actors to deliver outreach, farmer training, and extension services
- Aquaculture technology demonstration and testing
- Capacity development of supply chain intermediaries
- Provide aquaculture technical support and guidance to Musika and relevant private sector partners to ensure all sub-activities are implemented at a high-quality.
- Help develop the capacities of Musika and relevant private sector partners to implement the smallholder component activity and sub-activities and ensure greater sustainability after the life of the project.
- Together with Musika, assist the M&E&L Coordinator to collect data relevant to the project’s results framework.
- Provide aquaculture technical inputs during development and implementation of the upgraded curriculum, training tools, internship program, and online training platform.
- Develop scientific outputs over the course of the project that showcase the various outputs and outcomes delivered and achieved.
- In collaboration with Musika, provide inputs to the Project Manager on monthly work plans and budgets for financing project sub-activities.
- Provide technical reports on project sub-activities on a monthly basis, or as otherwise required. Support Musika with inputs into their technical reports.
- Troubleshoot any problems with fieldwork, reporting back to the Project Manager.
- Perform other related duties relevant to the role as may be assigned by the Project Leader or Manager.
REQUIREMENTS
This position is open to Zambian Nationals with the following skills and qualifications:
- A PhD in aquaculture/fisheries science and development studies.
- At least 5 years post-doctoral experience in aquaculture.
- Excellent proficiency of spoken and written English.
- Excellent communication skills in the local languages used in northern Zambia (e.g., ChiBemba)
- Strong record of publications in a related field.
- Motivation for high quality science and delivery of applications/impact from research.
- Experience of supervising staff.
- Knowledge and experience of working with the aquaculture industry.
- Knowledge and practical experience of working in rural Zambia with smallholder fish farmers
BENEFITS
This is a Nationally Recruited Staff (NRS) position with annual salary ranging between ZMW 391,000 – ZMW415, 000 per annum. WorldFish’s NRS shall receive comprehensive benefits including (but not limited to) insurance coverage for staff and eligible dependents, and pension / provident fund contribution.
Our Offer
This position will be based at WorldFish’s country office in Lusaka or Kasama, Zambia. Interviews are expected to be held in September 2018. Only shortlisted candidate will be notified and expected to attend the interview. The successful candidate should be available to commence as soon as possible for an initial 3 years fixed term contract, with the possibility of contract renewal depending on performance and funding availability.
