The five-year USAID DISCOVER-Health project aims to improve the lives of Zambians by ensuring equitable access to and use of high-quality HIV, maternal ncw-born and child health (MNCH), family planning and reproductive health (FP/RH) services and products at the district and community levels. The project utilizes and sustains a health model that maximizes the relative strengths of the public and private sectors to deliver health products and services that reach all beneficiaries and consumer markets.

The USAID DISCOVR-Health project is dcsigncd to provide scrviccs in ART, VMMC, MNCH, FP/SRH (oral contraceptives, injectable contraceptives etc), water purification, condom distribution and malaria prevention through rms. All these activities generate medical waste. With the generation high volumes of medical waste the probability of nosocomial infections remains high if waste is poorly handled in any of our sites. Additionally the medical waste we generate remains potentially harmful to society if not properly disposed off. Therefore, in order to reduce and if possible eliminate the risk of infection among our staff and the general public due to poor managernent of rrrdical waste and, further, in conformity with tlw National Waste Management Plan of Zambia and CWQLstandards for medical waste, we seek the services of a well-qualified and experienced Zambian to fill the position of Environmental Management Coordinator.

In general the Environmental Management Coordinator shall be the overall responsible person for the management of medical waste generated in all our operational sites. This entails management of the entire value chain from points of waste generation, segregation, transportation, disposal decontamination.

Main Responsibility:

Specifically, the Environmental Management Coordinator shall perform the following duties:

  • Collect and interpret GRZ policies on medical waste management and medical waste management in particular
  • In line with the national medical waste management plan, spearhead the development and dissemination of the medical waste management plan for USAID DISCOVER-Health;
  • Develop a training plan and programme and conduct trainings on medical waste management for both technical and support staff and volunteers;
  • Represent USAID DISCOVER-Health on all medical waste management technical working group meetings and other such meetings whenever they are called;
  • Provide internal CUQLinterventions in relation to medical waste management at our sites;
  • In consultation with unit heads, identify and train waste management focal point persons in respective service areas e.g VMMC, ART, MNCH, FP ;
  • Ensure that every project site has a trained team leader and that they are equipped with the necessary tools for medical waste management ;
  • Work with Hub Managers and other specialists to identi-fr institutions with functional incinerators and advise the project leadership on the signing of MOUs between USAID DISCOVER-Health and other institutions ;
  • Develop and use surveillance system to monitor adherence to SOPs on medical waste management in all USAID DISCOVER-Health operational sites;

Qualifications/Experience

  • Must have minimum of a diploma or degree in environmental health, public health or equivalent from a recognized college or university;
  • Must be registered with the Health Professions Council of Zambia;
  • Must be very conversant with laws and policies governing environmental waste in Zambia;
  • Must be a team player,
  • Must be an excellent communicator,
  • Willingness to travel extensively throughout Zambia
