A. Africa GreenCo and iMetric
Africa GreenCo via its operating entity GreenCo Power Services Limited (together GreenCo), acts an intermediary off-taker and service provider, purchasing power from renewable IIPs and selling that electricity to utilities and private sector off takers (i.e. commercial and industrial users) and markets of the SAPP. Through its activities, it will increase the supply of, and demand for, finance for energy projects, and mobilise private sector capital more quickly towards critical and transformative capacity addition.

Africa GreenCo DevCo, GreenCo’s non for profit arm recently developed an impact measuring tool called iMetric. iMetric is an impact data platform that will allow businesses and the public sector to calculate and communicate sustainable development impact. Starting with a case by case basis for a holistic understanding of industries, iMetric will measure impact for systems change. The platform uses international standards and ensures application of indicators that are highly contextually relevant for each sector with a focus on the southern African region.

B. The Role in Context
We invite ambitious and talented young professionals to apply for the position of Impacts Research Intern.

The role requires continual study of the complexity of impact and its understanding with respect to the sustainable development goals, and goals that promote ethical and responsible practices that will continue to be developed beyond the SDGs and ESGs.  We are implementing iMetric to support our internal impacts reporting as well as extending the utilisation of iMetric to external parties such as the public sector and businesses in southern Africa.

C. Key Duties
Impact research intern

A self-motivated passionate researcher who is personable, well-spoken professional with attention to detail and the ability to maintain trustworthy relationships with corporates and the public sector within Southern Africa. Well informed on all current affairs related to impacts and sustainable energy. Analytical and positively critical thinker.

 Key duties: Collect and input cleaned and correct data for iMetric to be able to present our findings on Impacts for the renewable energy, financial services and other sectors (including the public sector).

  • Contribute to development of frameworks with detailed data inputting based on unique research contexts for measuring impacts in the renewable energy, financial services and other sectors (including the public sector) with internationally relevant standards
  • Asses current market impact tools, apps and all manner of impact software available linked directly or indirectly to sustainable development goals and their sub targets and respective indicators
  •  Prepare bi-weekly draft newsletter updates in line with the GreenCo format for reporting (give short background, acknowledge any partnerships, state the announcement points, close with thanks where necessary)
  • Discover conferences and events or create them linked to impact or sustainable development or renewable energy and apply, prepare –register have all key tech needs and back up wi-fi and power to ensure a successful virtual or physical representation of iMetric and the GreenCo brand
  • Prepare monthly reports to share with stakeholders and partners for transparency and accountability
  •  Do field and other visits as required to gather required data for input into iMetric.

D. Qualifications and requirements
The Impacts intern will be expected to bring a combination of the following experience, personal attributes and qualifications:

  •   Impeccable attention to detail
  • Existing knowledge of development and impact theory, research tools and measurement techniques
  • Research experience with systems change knowledge mapping and analysis
  • Knowledge of impact methodologies and current gaps in theories and indicators
  • University degree or diploma in Environmental Development/Economics/Business or related field with a clear passion for impact research/Data analytics
  • Excellent working knowledge of English.
  • Keen interest in learning about and participating projects of interest to GreenCo
  • Ability to build relationships and work collaboratively but also keenly self-driven, independent and tenaciously motivated to deliver quality results
  • A naturally curious and innovative self-starter who can problem solve

This is a full-time internship role  – exceptional candidates could obtain a half-time position.
