Lunsemfwa Hydro Power Company Limited (LHPC) is an independent hydro-electric power producer based in Kabwe in the Central Province of Zambia. LHPC owns two Hydropower Stations namely, Mulungushi Power Station and Lunsemfwa Power Station with installed capacity of 32 MW and 24 MW respectively. The two Power Stations have both an upstream reservoir and four generating units each. The older units have undergone refurbishment in recent years. LHPC has Power Purchase Agreements with ZESCO and Copperbelt Energy Corporation. LHPC is also a member of the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP).

POWER TRADING/ ELECTRICAL NETWORK DEVELOPMENT ENGINEER X 1

Position Overview

The Power Trading/ Electrical Network Development Engineer is responsible for the management of the SAPP and Bilateral trading portfolio on a day-to-day basis. He/she is also responsible for designing, developing, and optimizing electrical power networks. This role involves planning and upgrading electrical infrastructure, ensuring system reliability, and integrating new technologies such as renewable energy sources and smart grid solutions. The engineer works closely with other utility companies in the interconnected system, project managers, and regulatory bodies to ensure compliance with industry standards and operational efficiency.

Key Responsibilities

1.0 Power Trading

  • Monitor and analyze electricity market trends, pricing, and demand forecasts.
  • Develop and optimize short-term and long-term power trading strategies.
  • Assess energy generation forecasts and their impact on market prices
  • Manage day-ahead, intraday, and real-time electricity trading
  • Optimize power generation dispatch and load schedules.
  • Ensure adherence to grid codes and market regulations

2.0 Electrical Network Planning & Design

  • Design and develop new power distribution and transmission networks.
  • Conduct load flow analysis, fault analysis, and stability studies to ensure network reliability.
  • Plan and implement grid expansion and reinforcement projects.

3.0 Network Optimization & Reliability

  • Assess existing electrical networks and recommend upgrades and improvements.
  • Implement smart grid technologies for efficient power management.
  • Develop strategies to reduce energy losses and improve power quality.

4.0 Integration of Renewable Energy & Emerging Technologies

  • Assess the impact of integrating solar, wind, and other renewable energy sources into the grid.
  • Develop strategies for energy storage and demand-side management.

5.0 Compliance & Regulatory Standards

  • Ensure all projects comply with national and international electrical standards (e.g., ZS387, GRID code and SAPP QOS).
  • Prepare technical reports and documentation for regulatory approvals.
  • Stay updated with new industry regulations and implement necessary changes.

6.0 Project Management & Collaboration

  • Work with government agencies, utility companies, and private developers on power network projects.
  • Manage budgets, timelines, and resources for network expansion and upgrade projects.
  • Provide technical support and guidance to junior engineers and field teams.

Qualifications / Education & Experience:

  • Grade 12 School Certificate with at least credits in Mathematics, science and English.
  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in electrical engineering, Power Systems Engineering, or a related field.
  • 3+ years of experience in electrical power network design, planning, or development.
  • Experience with power system analysis software (e.g., PSS/E, ETAP, DIgSILENT Power Factory).
  • Paid-up member of EIZ

Key Skills:

  • Strong understanding of power system design, transmission, and distribution networks.
  • Proficiency in load flow analysis, fault analysis, and grid planning.
  • Knowledge of smart grids, renewable energy integration, and energy storage.
  • Strong problem-solving, analytical, and project management skills.
  • Ability to interpret electrical schematics and technical drawings.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.

Work Environment & Expectations

  • Office-based with occasional site visits to power plants, substations, and field locations.
  • Will be expected to work in collaboration with power station managers based at the power plants
  • Collaboration with government agencies, utilities, and private sector stakeholders.
  • May require traveling for project implementation and stakeholder meetings.
