The Macha Research Trust (MRT) is a health research organization based at Macha Mission Hospital near Choma, Southern Province, Zambia. The institute conducts basic and applied research for strengthening interventions against malaria, Influenza HIV/AIDS and other health areas. The Institute seeks to recruit a suitably qualified candidate to take up the position of Scientific Director

JOB TITLE:  SCIENTIFIC DIRECTOR

REPORTS TO: Managing Director and Project Principal Investigators (PIs)

DETAILS OF THE JOB:  Provide day to day supervision, guidance and direction to the employees in the various scientific departments.  Specific tasks will include:

• Writing study protocols
• Develop and ensure compliance with SOPs and quality management systems
• Managing laboratory activities, including ensuring good lab practice and adherence to SOPs
• Lead in recruitment, training and overseeing of scientific staff
• Writing periodic reports as requested by management or PIs
• Scientific manuscript writing

The Scientific Director will work closely with the Managing Director, Senior Scientific Advisor, Principal Investigators and Project Coordinators at MRT in ensuring compliance with the necessary procedures for grant fund use and expenditure, as well as maintaining compliance with relevant Zambian government laws and regulations and internationally recognized research ethics considerations

ELIGIBLE CANDIDATE:

A) Ph. D. in relevant scientific field (e.g. Biomedical Science, Molecular Biology)

B) Experience and training in administration of research programs/projects

C) Experience of managing busy laboratories

D) African National, with priority given to Zambian citizen

E) Willingness to live in rural Zambia
