Zambia Sugar Plc., a large agro-industry which is part of Illovo Sugar Ltd, is the leading sugar producer in Zambia. Its main activities are the growing of sugarcane, the production and marketing of sugar and other sugar downstream products. The Company has a permanent employee base of 1 700 employees and offers medical, educational, sport, recreation and other  social facilities on the Estate in Mazabuka.

The recently expanded Nakambala Sugar Mill area comprises approximately 28 000 hectares of irrigated sugarcane. An approximately 17 000 hectares of the planted area is owned by Zambia Sugar Plc.; and the balance of 11 000 hectares is owned by fourteen commercial Growers and  three small-scale grower entities whose affairs are managed by the Estimated Recoverable Crystals (ERC) Committee comprising membership from Zambia Sugar Plc. and the Growers.

The Company now invites applications from suitably qualified persons to fill the following position;

1. TAXATION ACCOUNTANT – CUSTOMS (1)

Reporting to the Taxation Manager, the Taxation Accountant C ustoms will perform the fo Ilowing responsibilities:

  • Ensure tax compliance as provided under the Customs and Exercise Act.
  • Continuously engaging clearing Agents to ensure accuracy and completeness of all declarations for customs purposes.
  • Ensuring that all customs declarations are correctly classitied and valued based on current registration and practice,
  • Periodically reconciling all declarations made by the clearing agents to ensure compliance
  • Ensuring that Export sales documents submitted by the clearing agents are complete and. compliant for Value Added Tax (“VAT”) Rule 18 and duty drawback (“DDB”) purposes.
  • Engaging the relevant units of the Tax Authorities on Customs issues affecting the company.
  • Preparing Monthly DDB accruals and Journals, based on export sales made during the month or claims submitted to Zambia Revenue Authority (“ZRA”).
  • Reconciling all DDB submissions to refunds received from the ZRA, and subsequently engaging the agent to resolve any outstanding entries or rejected claims.
  • Providing a comprehensive status update on the VAT Rule 18 documentation, detailing the potential tax exposure and action plan to mitigate the exposure.
  • Providing an estimate of duty of the duty and fees payable with respect to forecasts and budgets for cash flow planning purposes.
  • Assisting with the development and updating of internal customs procedures to ensure efficiency in the management and mitigation of Tax risks associated with exports and imports.
  • Conducting customs self-assessment reviews and initiate any necessary corrections and payment of any taxes so underpaid.
  • Ensuring that payment of import and export taxes to the ZRA are made on or before the statutory due dates.
  • Continuously engaging procurement and seeking ways to develop responsive harmonized processes that are simple but robust amid unexpected tax changes.
  • Closely working with the export and logistics teams to eliminate gaps which may result in significant tax risks.
  • Assisting with drafting responses to the ZRA writh respect to queries or clarifications regarding the company’s exports and imports.
  • Assisting with the management ot ZRA customs inspections or audits
  • Providing input for the monthly tax update report for internal and group reporting purposes
  • Ensure that all monthly tax reconciliations are performed timely and submitted for review and filling.
  • Coordinate team work to ensure proper with and across Sections or Departments.

Qualification, Skills and Experience

  • Grade 12 School Certificate.
  • Degree in Accountancy/ZICA/ACCA/CIMA
  • Minimum of 4 years relevant work experience in Customs Services, industry or commercial environment
  • Understanding of Zambian Tax legislation, banking and Financial services Act
  • Financial analytical skills
