Zambart is an independent Zambian research organization whose headquarters is at the University of Zambia’s Ridgeway Campus in Lusaka. Zambart is globally renowned for its interdisciplinary research on HIV and Tuberculosis and has contributed to HIV and TB policy and practice at national and global levels. Zambart’s research portfolio now includes a broader scope of urgent public health issues.

To support our wide range of research activities, we are looking for an ambitious, suitably qualified candidate to fill the following exciting position that has arisen:
Position: Stigma TFA – Qualitative Research Assistant (1)
Reporting to: TFA Social Scientist

Position Summary
Building on a long history of conducting health-related stigma research and interventions, Zambart’s leading a three-year multi-country project funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The ‘Total Facility Approach: Assessing the Impact on Stigma and HIV Outcomes’ project aims to expand a Total Facility Approach (TFA) to reduce HIV stigma and discrimination in health facilities for all health staff and clients accessing HIV prevention, treatment and care services. Using both qualitative and quantitative research methods, the project will collect data at baseline, midline and endline over its three-year duration. The qualitative data will support all five monitoring and evaluation objectives: 1) Impact on client HIV-related outcomes; 2) Impact on experiences of stigma and discrimination; 3) Quality and fidelity/ appropriateness of implementation; 4) Barriers and facilitators of implementation and 5) Cost and cost-effectiveness. Data collection will involve trained expert client observations and debrief interviews, in-depth interviews and focus group discussions with hospital staff, nursing students, tutors and clinical supervisors across two public hospitals and nursing schools in Choma district, Zambia.
One year into the project, we are looking for a qualitative research assistant to support the lead social scientist. This role offers an exciting opportunity for either a recent social science graduate seeking further research training OR an experienced qualitative research assistant with relevant skills.
Roles and Responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
- To support the lead social scientist with qualitative research activities
- To assist with the recruitment and selection of study participants
- Obtain informed consent from the participants while ensuring confidentiality and respect
- Participate in project-related trainings on study procedures and data collection tools
- Introduce the project and related monitoring and evaluation activities to the stakeholders
- Will conduct focus group discussions (FGDs) and in-depth interviews (IDIs)
- Transcribe all FGDs and IDIs conducted accurately
- Report daily progress to the supervisor
- Support data analysis and quantitative research activities when needed
- Perform other tasks as assigned for project success
Required qualifications
- Degree in Demography, Economics, sociology, Development studies, project management or any social science or related degree.
- Recent graduates are also encouraged to apply
- At least a minimum 1-year relevant work experience
- Should have experience in conducting in-depth interviews and/or focus group discussions
- Strong interpersonal and communication (oral and written) skills
- Proficient in Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel)
- Fluency in English and Tonga
- Strong transcription skills
- Conversant with NVivo (qualitative data management software) an added advantage
- Flexibility and adaptability
- Should be a resident of Choma or willing to move to Choma
