to Improve Health for All

Zambart is an independent Zambian research organization with a head office at Ridgeway Campus in Lusaka. Zambart is globally renown for interdisciplinary research of excellence on HIV and Tuberculosis and has contributed to HIV and TB policy and practice at national and global levels. Zambart’s research portfolio now includes a broader scope of urgent public health issues.

Building on a long history of conducting locally relevant public health research, Zambart is taking part in a multi-country research project, funded by the European and Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP), entitled ‘Evaluating the impact of computer-assisted x-ray diagnosis and other triage tools to optimize Xpert oriented community-based active case finding for TB and COVID-19 (XACT-19).

The XACT-19 study has three components: 1) A pragmatic multi-country open-labelled Randomized Controlled Trial involving high-risk persons with suspected TB (symptomatic, and/or HIV-infected, and/or with previously treated TB, and/or with contact treated for TB in the previous two years, and/or with diabetes). The intervention is on-site Computer Aided Diagnosis (CAD) X-ray plus Point-of-Care (POC) GeneXpert versus   POC Xpert alone in all symptomatic (one or more of any TB symptoms) and/or HIV-infected participants; 2) A prospective observational cohort recruiting asymptomatic and HIV-uninfected individuals. CAD, POC Xpert, and TB culture will be performed in all individuals with prospective follow-ups at two and 6 months; and 3). A cross-sectional cohort with prospective follow-up of participants who are symptomatic for COVID-19.   The project is also being carried out with partners in Zimbabwe and South Africa.
