Zambart is an independent Zambian research organization whose headquarters is at the University of Zambia’s Ridgeway Campus in Lusaka. Zambart is globally renowned for its interdisciplinary research on HIV and Tuberculosis and has contributed to HIV and TB policy and practice at national and global levels. Zambart’s research portfolio now includes a broader scope of urgent public health issues. Zambart staff form an interdisciplinary team with a range of expertise including epidemiology, clinical science, social science, laboratory, operations research, health systems and services research, health policy analysis, health economics, health communication and counselling.

To support our wide range of research activities, we are looking for an ambitious, suitably qualified candidate to fill the following exciting position that has arisen:

Position: Senior Finance Officer

Reporting to: Finance Manager

Duty Station: Zambart House, Lusaka.

Position Summary:

This role is responsible for routine financial management activities of Zambart and supports the Finance Manager to develop and implement sound, effective and efficient financial management system across the organisation.

The Key roles and responsibilities will include but not limited to:

  • Support research teams in preparation of budgets and plans during proposal writing ensuring the Zambart policies is followed in all proposal budgeting
  • Support the Finance Manager in preparation and consolidation of annual organizational wide budgets
  • Prepare monthly management reports that provide analysis and comment to support decision making.
  • Assists the Finance Manager in establishing and implementing robust budgetary controls
  • Assist the Finance Manager in coordinating and supporting internal and external audits.
  • Assists the Finance Manager to develop, test, and implement policies and procedures to ensure an internal control environment and maintenance of accurate accounting records
  • Review and post cashbook entries in Pastel Evolution in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Monitor the balance sheet items, especially all debtors and creditors
  • Prepare and process monthly payroll journals for posting onto Pastel as well as other monthly routines
  • Prepare monthly bank reconciliations for review by the Finance Manager
  • Reconcile Inter Project Accounts and highlight and resolve any differences.
  • Review, analyze and post monthly overhead recharges journal to respective projects.
  • Assist in cash flow management and preparation of donor invoices.
  • Support preparation of management accounts
  • Prepare accurate quarterly and annual donor-specific reports.
  • Support the Finance Manager in the preparation of annual statutory accounts for audit.
  • Any other duties as may be assigned by the supervisor

Essential Requirements:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Finance, Accounting or an equivalent professional accounting qualification such as ACA, ACCA, CIMA, CPA
  • You must have excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to analyse and summarize complex information.
  • You must have a strong understanding of business and finance principles to interpret data and make strategic recommendations.
  • You must have strong computer skills and proficiency with spreadsheet and accounting software programs
  • Must have strong leadership, managerial abilities, good interpersonal skills and be able to work well under pressure.
  • You must have hands on experience of planning, budgeting and management reporting
  • Must be registered with ZICA
  • Good accounting and double entry skills
  • Must be analytical and detail-oriented with good math skills and an expert understanding of current accounting principles.
  • Experience of donor grant management including institutional, private and corporate donations will be an added advantage
  • Good understanding of Pastel Evolution, or a similar multi-dimensional accounting system.
  • Excellent MS Excel skills
  • Neat and attention to detail

Desirable:

  • Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing and with strong interpersonal skills
  • A team player
  • Good planning skills/follow up on own work
