The Zambia Institute of Environmental Management (ZIEM) is a leading think tank organization dedicated to promoting sustainable development through training, advocacy, and policy engagement. ZIEM is a non-governmental organization established in 2009 whose mandate is to increase participation in environmental management, climate change and natural resource governance. Through research, training, policy analysis, and community engagement, ZIEM is committed to empower communities to sustainably use natural resources and the need for adaptive environment as a basic fundamental human right. We seek a highly skilled and qualified professionals to join our dynamic team in the following positions.

1. Training Manager

2. Legal Officer (Kitwe office)

1. Position: Training Manager

Key Duties and Responsibilities;

The successful candidate will be expected to perform the following duties;

  • Design, develop, and deliver high-quality training programs for a variety of stakeholders, including government agencies, NGOs, local communities, and private sector partners.
  • Conduct training needs assessments to identify skills gaps and align training content with organizational objectives and local environmental priorities.
  • Lead training sessions, workshops, and seminars for diverse groups, ensuring engagement and effective learning outcomes.
  • Implement monitoring and evaluation mechanisms to assess the impact of training programs and recommend improvements.
  • Work closely with government bodies, NGOs, community groups, and environmental experts to ensure that training is relevant and up-to-date with current issues and policies.
  • Manage training budgets, resources, and logistics to ensure programs are delivered efficiently and within budgetary constraints.
  • Prepare reports on training activities, outcomes, and recommendations for stakeholders and funders.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the CEO.

Qualification & Experience

  • Master’s degree in Environmental Management, Master’s degree in Environmental and Natural Resources Management, Master’s of Business Administration (MBA), Master’s of Environmental Engineering/Science.
  • At least 3 years experience in training management and course coordination in high learning institution.
  • Understanding of Programme marketing is a must.
  • Experience of undertaking training in high learning institution.
  • Experience in digital/physical and social marketing.
  • Computer literacy- proficiency in MS Office (Excel, word, Powerpoint) and web conferencing applications.

2. Position: Legal Officer

Key Duties and Responsibilities;

The successful candidate will be expected to perform the following duties;

  • Provide legal advice and guidance to ZIEM’s team on issues related to environmental laws, policies, and regulations.
  • Ensure that ZIEM’s activities comply with local, regional, and national environmental laws and regulations.
  • Review, draft, and negotiate legal agreements, memoranda of understanding (MOUs), and contracts for various ZIEM projects, ensuring compliance with applicable laws.
  • Represent ZIEM in legal matters, including environmental disputes, negotiations with government agencies, or other entities, and any court or tribunal cases that may arise.
  • Support advocacy efforts on environmental legal reforms by providing legal input and working with local stakeholders, including government agencies and environmental bodies.
  • Conduct legal training sessions for ZIEM staff and stakeholders on environmental laws and regulations, focusing on compliance and best practices.
  • Prepare regular legal reports on ZIEM’s legal matters and environmental compliance, and advise senior management on emerging legal issues.
  • Collaborate with government agencies, local communities, NGOs, and other stakeholders to ensure that ZIEM’s activities are aligned with legal and regulatory requirements.

Qualifications and Skills

  • A Law degree (LLB) from a recognized institution. A post-graduate qualification in environmental law or a related field will be an added advantage.
  • Must be admitted to the bar
  • Member of Law Association of Zambia
  • At least 2 years of professional legal experience, with a focus on environmental law, policy, or related fields. Experience working in the NGO sector or with government bodies is highly desirable.
  • Strong understanding of Zambia’s environmental laws, regulations, and policies, including knowledge of the Environmental Management Act and other relevant statutes.
  • Proven experience in legal representation, dispute resolution, and negotiation, with the ability to manage legal risks effectively.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to explain complex legal concepts to non-legal stakeholders and write clear, concise reports.
  • Legal drafting is skills is an asset
  • Strong attention to detail, with the ability to analyze legal documents and identify potential risks or compliance issues.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse groups, including local communities, government agencies, and other stakeholders.
  • Computer literacy- proficiency in MS Office (Excel, word, PowerPoint) and web conferencing applications.
