You are free because you are educated. This is the essence of this quote from slave turned philosopher, Epictetus.
Who was Epictetus?
Epictetus was born ancient Greek philosopher. He was born in c. 55AD in present day Turkey and lived in Rome until his banishment. He spent his youth as a slave to a wealthy person in Rome.
At some point in his life he became lame with reports indicating that his master may have deliberately broken his leg. Even so, he went on to study philosophy and and grew in respectability as he became more educated.
He eventually gained his freedom and began to teach in Rome. He taught in Rome until c.93AD when the Emperor Domitian banished all philosophers from the city at which point he fled to Greece.
Epictetus maintained that the foundation of all philosophy is self-knowledge and also taught that good alone is profitable and to be desired whilst evil is hurtful and to be avoided.
