Lumwana Mining Company Limited (LMC), a copper mining company owned by Barrick Gold Corporation is situated in the Northwestern region of Zambia, some 300 km west of the Zambian Copperbelt and 95 km southwest of the provincial capital of Solwezi. The mine is a multi-pit, multi staged operation mining approximately 100MT of ore and waste per annum and producing copper concentrates containing an average of 120,000 tonnes of copper metal per year over a twenty (20) year mine life, making Lumwana the largest single open cut copper mine in Africa. The Company is now looking for an experienced and qualified individual to be considered for the position of Biodiversity Conservation Officer.

Role Summary

Reporting to the Senior Environmental Officer – Biodiversity, your duties will include but not limited to the following;

Responsibilities

Ecological and Law Enforcement data collection, analysis, and management using the approved systems
Assist in the drafting of the necessary Standard Operating Procedures
Coordinating and providing logistical support to community scouts
Ensure that the established site monitoring and reporting systems are fully operational and up to date
Monitoring protected forest boundaries in the 3 Chiefdoms under the REDD+ Project
Implement strategies in collaboration with sustainability that will ensure zero deforestation and poaching incidents in the protected forests
Ensure strategic partnership-building and engagement with relevant key stakeholders and local communities
Anti-poaching patrol planning and deployment of officers (Community scouts) in the field.
Work closely with sustainability in timely closure of grievances in line with the project grievance restitution mechanism.

Experience & Qualifications

Full grade 12 School Certificate
Degree in Environmental related science such as Botany, Zoology, Wildlife, Natural Resources Management or equivalent from a recognized University
A minimum of at least 5 years post qualification experience preferably in natural resources management field in a senior managerial role. (Experience in the mining industry, wildlife management, enforcement, ecosystem assessment, or licensing environment will be an added advantage)
Working knowledge of ISO 14001 Environmental Management System and ISO 45001:2018 Health and Safety Management System.
Possessing a valid Zambian or SADC driver’s licence
Proven ability to deliver results and act as a change agent.
Experience in managing wildlife scouts and project management
Demonstrated application of continuous improvement ideas
