Who we are

Kids Alive (www.kidsalive.org) is a child focused and Christ-centered organization with the belief that every child, even those with the most challenging needs, is a priority to God, because too many are overlooked, unheard, exploited, and threatened. Kids Alive International is a nonprofit organization established in 1916 with programs which meet the physical, social, emotional, educational and spiritual needs of children within residential settings while strengthening and empowering families to create a safe and secure environment for children.  Kids Alive Zambia (KAZ) has been operating in the country since 2001 with its legacy programs; the Kids Alive Academy, Trauma Informed Care and Residential support. Currently KAZ is also implementing the Spring of Life program addressing issues of circumstantial children; known to us as the “forgotten child,” the Ray of Hope program focusing on the plight of the street children, lastly the Isaiah program focusing on sexually abused children. Our mission is the call of Isaiah 1:17, to serve these children by constantly learning to do good, earnestly seeking justice, standing up to what oppresses them, and advocating for their rights. Our vision is to see the whole range of children’s needs met, their lives transformed, and for them to become productive citizens and effective Christian witnesses in their own societies.

Kids Alive Academy (KAA) is seeking to recruit a Primary Teacher and Early Childhood Education Teacher that has experience teaching grades 1-3 and pre-grade respectively.  Must be hardworking, ambitious, and agile as well as a self-starters with strong Christian values and ready to take on the challenge of educating some of the most vulnerable children and ensure that they receive a good Christ centered education that which will transform them forever to be responsible and good citizens. The school is further seeking the services of a Cook, who will manage to cook for over 500 learners and must have some experience in operating kitchen equipment such as broilers and other kitchen utensils. Lastly the services of a Driver to facilitate both the school, Lilato Children’s Village and Trauma Informed Care team.

Location for all the positions: Mongu (Mongu residents and surrounding areas are encouraged to apply, preferably with good understanding and spokenSilozi, mbunda and English.

1. Class Teacher

Position Summary

As Class Teacher ensure assessment of learners by adequately preparing for class. Ensure academic progress is evaluated through some of the best tools and methodologies as well as adherence and apply efficiently health, safety, child protection and safeguarding standards and policies. As a Teacher, make a positive contribution towards the organization’s Christian ethos and witness through modeling of Christ centered character and adherence to child safeguarding processes.

Major Responsibilities but not limited to;

  • To teach children on subjects assigned to the teacher according to the Ministry of Education Curriculum
  • To assess specific educational, emotional and behavioral needs of individual children.
  • To help maintain a high standard of discipline in the school.
  • To produce visual displays of children’s work and endeavor to help create an attractive, stimulating learning environment
  • To keep appropriate records of children’s progress and systematically evaluate progress.
  • To undertake follow up visits to the home/s of the learner when necessary in collaboration with the counseling and guidance teacher as well as the Trauma Care team in case of any incidences
  • Develop and issue educational content including notes, tests, and assignments as well as assess them.
  • Supervise classes to ensure all learners are learning in a safe and productive environment.
  • Organize supplies and resources for teaching and presentations.
  • Deliver personalized instruction to each student by encouraging interactive learning.
  • Plan and implement various educational activities and events.
  • Ensure your classroom is clean and orderly.
  • Prepare and distribute periodic progress reports and term report forms.
  • Attend parent-teacher meetings (PTAs) and create an interactional space for parent/guardians of learners.
  • Undertake any reasonable additional responsibilities at the request for the supervisor, school management or the Kids Alive management through the supervisor

Spiritual growth among Learners and staff

  • Provide practical and visible spiritual leadership and mentorship to fellow staff and learners.
  • Provide an inspired hope centered on Christ to learners under Kids Alive programing through creating spaces for scriptural reflections learners.
  • Ensure facilitation of Christ based trauma informed care for learners entrusted in your care.
  • Proactively create safeguarding safe spaces for learners and report any child protection incident

Essential Skills & Competencies

  • Strong Christian with unquestionable religious disposition.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent analytical thought processes with superb attention to detail.
  • Excellent organizational, strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Must be able to teach in English and Lozi
  • Must be able to speak Lozi and any other local languages fluently
  • Strong teaching skills and abilities with ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
  • Ability to manage time, prioritize projects, and carry them through to completion.
  • Proven ability to work in a team environment with a positive attitude, high level of self-motivation.
  • Ability to teach learners how to read.
  • Ability to prepare and be creative in displaying learner friendly classroom.
  • Ability to work in a team

Experience and Qualifications

  • Minimum Diploma in Primary school teaching, degree in primary teaching is added advantage;
  • Accredited Diploma or Certificate in Early Childhood Education.
  • At least 2-3 years’ experience as a primary school teacher. Fresh graduates will also be considered with demonstrated zeal and agility to take on the challenge in teaching career.
  • Registered and licensed with Teaching Council of Zambia. (TCZ)
  • Must demonstrate sound, strong knowledge of phonics.
  • Holder of a valid practicing license
  • Understanding and appreciation of the challenges of working in an international organization or NGO environment, respecting and understanding the diversity of people and cultures
  • In-depth knowledge of teaching methods and legal educational procedures.

2. Pre-school Teacher

Position Summary

The Preschool Teacher will be expected to take care and interact with the children in all aspects. Ensure children do not lack in any way as well as development of monthly lesson plans from time to time as required and implement activities as planned.  Support a hygienic health and safe environment for the children. Adhere to the set government curriculum and ensure result oriented standards are met in terms of performance for pre-learners. The candidate is expected to make a positive contribution towards the organization’s Christian ethos and witness and child safeguarding processes.

Major Responsibilities

  • Support and ensure the welfare, health and safety of children is promoted and is within the child protection and safeguarding protocols.
  • Lesson planning and classroom schedule as well as room arrangement consistent with ERS (Environment Rating Scales for pre-school learners);
  • Identify any barriers to learning and report to the Pre-school Teacher;
  • Ensure children have food service at the appropriate time;
  • Maintain and build positive relationships with children and their parents;
  • Promote a culture of trust and security in the school;
  • Lead interactive prayer, Bible lessons and other spiritual activities by creating spaces for such activities;
  • Understand Kids Alive mission statement and apply it in your daily work;
  • Maintain safe, clean environment, teaching and modelling good hygiene skills;
  • Participate in planning and implementation of pre-school interactive events;
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding all personal information regarding children, families and staff;
  • Contribute to the drawing up of plans that ensure each child is making progress in all areas of development.
  • Participate and be involved in developing the preschool as a centre of excellence in early childhood learning and support.
  • Ensure that the playgroup, other play equipment are safe for the children.
  • Maintain standards of hygiene while ensuring high safety procedures are implemented at all times which will include fire drills are regularly practiced.
  • Participate and be involved in the drafting, reviewing, updating and implementing the playgroup policies e.g. register and signing out procedures, child protection, health and safety and confidentiality liaison with the Senior Teacher and Head Teacher.
  • Help collect interesting and exciting ‘open ended’ play materials for the indoor and outdoor learning environment.
  • Foster the promotion of the preschool in the local community and maintain the Christ-centeredness image.
  • Ensure children participate in safe guarding spaces through interactive message sharing and knowledge (voices, picture story telling etc.).
    Perform any other duties as assigned.

  • Good parenting skills, and notable integrity is KEY to this position;
  • Ability to demonstrate and teach Christ-based behaviours, a strong Christian with unquestionable religious disposition;
  • Exposure, understanding and appreciation of the challenges of working in a child- friendly environment or excellent experience with children;
  • Good understanding of diverse cultures, appreciation and respect in all aspects;
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality, manage time, prioritize assignments,
  • Strong interpersonal skills including the ability to work and communicate effectively and collaboratively;
  • Ability to work in a team and promote a positive environment;
  • Ability to communicate, clear speech expression, and reasonably accurate spoken and written English as well as local dialect that can serve as a good communicative channel for children who are developing their language skills is desirable;
  • Warm nurturing attitude, Friendly, approachable, self-motivated and flexible;
  • Good planning, organizational and problem solving skills.
  • Must be able to teach, speak and communicate fluently in English, mbunda and silozi.

Experience and Qualifications

  • Minimum grade 12 Certificate,
  • Certificate in Early Childhood Education,
  • Certification in Literacy studies is an added advantage
  • Computer literate is an added advantage
  • Continuous Professional development (CPD) certifications/certificate relating to the position or Early Childhood Education trainings is added advantage
  • In-depth knowledge and understanding of teaching methods and legal educational procedures is added advantage to ensure compliance.
  • Holder of a valid practicing license

3.  Driver

Position Summary

Safely drive different vehicles, moving staff, children and materials/goods locally and in between cities. Ensure adherence to health, safety and vehicle/fleet management policies. The candidate is expected to make a positive contribution towards the organization’s Christian ethos and witness and child safeguarding processes.

Position Responsibilities

a)    Driving

  • Driving a variety of vehicles in different and sometimes difficult terrains as assigned.
  • Transporting children to various points, including schools, tours and other destinations as may be directed by supervisor.
  • Transport staff to their duty stations, homes or on errands as maybe assigned by supervisor.
  • Dropping off or Picking up staff and other delegates at the airports.
  • Driving sick children to the hospital for medication.
  • Updating daily and monthly mileage records for the vehicles
  • Picking up office supplies, purchases and deliveries
  • Driving executive officers such as the Country Director and visiting international staff as need may arise.

b)   Motor Vehicle Maintenance

  • Ensure all vehicles are clean at all times.
  • Maintain a well-documented motor vehicle service record
  • Conduct routine vehicle servicing, trouble shooting and frontline repairs
  • Arrange for vehicle repairs when necessary
  • Recommend professional actions to be taken by management for maintenance and repair of motor vehicles.

b)   Administrative duties

  • Assist in procurement of office supplies as maybe delegated by supervisor from time to time.
  • In consultation with supervisor, devise forms and tools necessary for vehicle management.
  • Conduct fuel usage and maintenance cost analyses
  • Ensure all vehicles have valid road tax, fitness and insurance as required.
  • Ensure all first aid boxes are well positioned and stocked in vehicle/s.
  • Ensure that all health and safety precautions and measures are adhered to.
  • Any other duties assigned by management through the supervisor.

c)    Spiritual growth among children and staff

  • Participate in inspirational and the hope centered on Christ to children under Kids Alive programing.
  • Ensure adherence to child protection and safeguarding protocols

Experience and Qualifications

  • Grade 12 certificate
  • Auto-mechanic craft certificate and ICT defensive driving certificate.
  • Over 3 years manual transmission driving experience is added advantage
  • 2-4 years of experience working in a similar role.
  • Minimum class C 1 driver’s license, PSV driver’s license added advantage
  • Defensive driving skills will be an added advantage.
  • Experience in submission of vehicle reports for maintenance and fuel mileage tracking
  • Certified training in Mechanical or auto electrical engineering is an added advantage.
  • Must be computer literate and able to speak Silozi and English
  • Must be mature, calm, neat and presentable at all times
  • INGO/NGO exposure will be a plus

4. Cook

Position Summary

The Cook is responsible for delivering food that is not only delicious and cooked to meet the nutritional value for learners and staff, but also safe and fresh. Preferably Male applicants are encouraged to apply for this position. The candidate is expected to make a positive contribution towards the organization’s Christian ethos and witness and child safeguarding processes.

Major responsibilities:

  • Follow the approved standard of a diet meal for learners (recipes, including measuring, weighing and mixing ingredients).
  • Cook all types of food provided to the expected standards
  • Maintain a clean and safe work area, including handling utensils, equipment and dishes
  • Handle and store ingredients and food in a clean environment
  • Maintain food safety and sanitation standards
  • Clean and sanitize work areas, equipment and utensils
  • Have a record of food purchases and monitor stock levels to know when to make timely requests.
  • Operate kitchen equipment such as broilers and others as provided by the school
  • Ensure the dining hall for learners is clean before serving any food.
  • Ensure safety for the learners and maintain restrictions in kitchen
  • Perform any other duties as assigned.

Experience, Skills and Qualifications

  • Preferably a certificate or diploma in food production and management, Hotel and catering or any apprentice certification
  • Knowledge of safety procedures, including safe temperatures at which ingredients must be kept and to which food must be prepared to avoid foodborne illness
  • Ability to work as part of a team, collaborating on complex dishes
  • Strong Christian with unquestionable religious disposition.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with both staff and learners.
  • Must pay attention to detail.
  • A team player with good communication and collaborative skills.
  • Ability to read and write.
  • Must be able to speak Lozi and English.
  • Positive attitude, energetic and high level of self-motivation to cook for learners.
  • Calm demeanor to work in a high-stress, fast-paced environment
  • Be accountable for anything that relates to the kitchen and dining hall in meeting the expected standards.
  • Must be healthy and fit to stand in one place for hours at a time, handle extreme heat and workload.
