JSI Research & Training Institutes (JSI) implements the USAID DISCOVER-Health to support the Ministry of Health (MOH) in the provision of quality health services and products. The project’s aim is to improve the lives of Zambians by ensuring equitable access to and use of high-quality HIV, maternal new-born and child health (MNCH), family planning and reproductive health (FP/RH) services and products at the district and community levels. The project utilizes and sustains a health model that maximizes the relative strengths of the public and private sectors to deliver health products and services that reach all beneficiaries and consumer markets. USAID DISCOVER-Health is also supporting MOH in the national COVID-19 response.

In a collaborative effort with the Ministry of Health, JSI USAID DISCOVER Health Project is recruiting for the following Ministry of Health positions:

Job Title: Laboratory Scientist – Sample Management (1 position)
Qualification: Degree in Biomedical Sciences
Work station: UTH Virology Laboratory
Reports to: Scientist in Charge

Responsibility:

  • Management of COVID samples including sample registration, temporary storage and distribution to testing labs
  • Management of the sample carrier/cooler box decontamination and redistribution system
  • Supervision of DISA-Link COVID-19 operations and liaison with CIDRZ Life sample transportation system for COVID samples
  • Monitoring and reporting on samples received, backlog numbers and other related information
  • Any other duty as may be assigned by the supervisor

Skills and other requirements

  • Minimum work experience of three (3) years in a medical laboratory with at least one year at Supervisory level.
  • Knowledge of relevant medical laboratory technical work and Experience in laboratory quality management systems.
  • Demonstrable understanding of effective Sample referral systems
  • Proficient in the use of Laboratory Information System LIS (DISA-Link)
  • Excellent analytical, written and oral communication skills
  • Computer proficiency in Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Full registration with the Health Professions Council of Zambia and in possession of a valid practicing license
  • Team player

Job Title: Records Clerk (1 position)
Qualification: Diploma in Records Management or Information Technology (IT)
Work station: UTH Virology Laboratory
Reports to: Laboratory Scientist – Sample Management

Responsibility:

  • Assists in the documentation of COVID-19 samples including sample registration, labelling and lifting/transportation of sample carriers, organization of the temporary storage area
  • Maintains records of sample distribution to testing labs
  • Data entry of patient information in an accurate and timely manner
  • Resolve and document any problems with specimens.
  • Sorting out lab results to ensure that they are sent to intended facilities
  • Any other duty as may be assigned by the supervisor

Skills and other requirements

  • Minimum work experience of two (2) years preferably in a health institution
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Computer proficiency in Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Team player

Job Title: Laboratory Scientist (3 positions)
Qualification: Degree in Biomedical Sciences
Work station: UTH Virology Laboratory, Molecular Biology Section
Reports to: Scientist in Charge

Responsibility:

  • Supervision of testing teams during work shifts
  • Accessioning of COVID-19 samples
  • Performance of COVID-19 diagnostic assays and oversight of quality control
  • Inventory control of commodities used in testing of COVID-19 samples
  • Equipment management including preventive maintenance and calibration for instruments used in testing for COVID 19
  • Corrective actions in case of any non-conformances arising in the course of sample testing
  • Assisting in management of data generated in the COVID 19 laboratory
  • Any other duty as may be assigned by the supervisor

Skills and other requirements 

  • Minimum work experience of three (3) years in a medical laboratory
  • Knowledge of relevant medical laboratory technical work and Experience in laboratory quality management systems.
  • Excellent analytical, written and oral communication skills

  • Performance of COVID-19 diagnostic assays
  • Inventory control of commodities used in testing of COVID-19 samples
  • Equipment management including preventive maintenance and calibration for instruments used in testing for COVID 19
  • Management of any data generated in the COVID 19 laboratory
  • Any other duty as may be assigned by the supervisor

Job Title: Data Manager (1 position)
Qualification: Degree in IT
Work station: UTH Virology Laboratory
Reports to: Unit Head

Responsibility:

  • Oversees use of the Laboratory Information System (DISA) for management of COVID-19 data
  • Prepares excel reports daily on COVID-19 test results for the UTH Virology Lab and compiles a composite report of results from all testing labs for submission to ZNPHI/MOH
  • Receives daily reports from COVID labs on routinely monitored indicators, performs analyses and generates daily lab performance updates
  • Ensures test results are printed and issued as necessary
  • Any other duty as may be assigned by the supervisor

Skills and other requirements

  • Minimum work experience of 3 years in a health institution.
  • Computer proficiency in Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Excellent analytical, written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to give direction to subordinates under him/ her towards achieving pre-set goals.
  • Demonstrable abilities to meet target
  • Team player
