Position Overview:
The Geologists will bridge the gap between geological potential and community benefit by providing ASM operators with critical information on mineral deposits. This role is essential for increasing mining efficiency, reducing fruitless excavation, and linking mineral potential to sustainable economic development.
Key Responsibilities:
- Map and assess ASM sites to identify mineralized zones and provide guidance on optimal extraction points for target minerals.
- Collect and analyze rock and soil samples to help communities understand the grade and value of their mineral resources.
- Work with government agencies to facilitate ASM access to existing geological data and maps.
- Train miners in basic geological concepts, including mineral identification, ore body geometry, and waste management.
- Support the ASM Formalization Program Manager in assessing the economic potential of mining claims and cooperatives.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Geology or Earth Sciences. A Master’s degree is preferred.
- At least 5 years of practical experience in mineral exploration or mining geology.
- Proficiency in geological mapping, sampling techniques, and GIS software.
- Experience with the geology of Zambian copper-cobalt belts, manganese, or emerald deposits is highly desirable.
- Strong commitment to community-based development and capacity building.
