Intern Assistant Accountant
Job Purpose
GEMIK is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Intern Assistant Accountant to join our Finance Team. The successful candidate will assist in maintaining accurate accounting records, processing financial transactions, preparing journal entries, and supporting the preparation of financial statements. This role is designed to provide practical exposure to accounting, taxation, financial reporting, and business advisory services.
A key requirement for this position is a solid understanding of accounting journals and financial statements, as the intern will be actively involved in the accounting cycle from transaction recording through to financial reporting.
Key Responsibilities
1. Journal Processing & Accounting Entries
- Prepare and post journal entries under supervision.
- Assist in reviewing supporting documentation for journal transactions.
- Ensure all accounting entries are properly authorized and accurately recorded.
- Maintain journal schedules and filing systems.
2. Financial Statement Support
- Assist in the preparation of monthly management accounts.
- Support the preparation of financial statements including:
- Statement of Financial Position (Balance Sheet)
- Statement of Profit or Loss
- Cash Flow Statement
- Statement of Changes in Equity
- Perform reconciliations to support financial reporting.
3. Accounts Reconciliations
- Reconcile bank accounts and cash balances.
- Assist in reconciling supplier and customer accounts.
- Investigate and report any unreconciled items.
4. Accounts Payable & Receivable
- Process supplier invoices and payment requests.
- Assist in monitoring outstanding receivables.
- Maintain accurate records of payments and collections.
5. Record Keeping & Documentation
- Maintain proper accounting records and supporting documents.
- File financial documents both physically and electronically.
- Ensure records are readily available for audits and management review.
6. Budgeting & Reporting Support
- Assist in budget preparation and monitoring.
- Compile financial data for management reports.
- Support variance analysis and other financial reviews.
7. Audit Support
- Prepare audit schedules and supporting documentation.
- Assist with internal and external audit requests.
- Ensure completeness and accuracy of audit evidence.
8. Compliance Support
- Assist with statutory returns and regulatory submissions.
- Support compliance with accounting standards, company policies, and tax regulations.
9. Other Duties
- Participate in stock counts and asset verification exercises.
- Assist with special projects assigned by the Finance Manager.
- Perform other accounting and administrative duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Diploma or Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- Recent graduate or currently pursuing a professional accounting qualification (e.g., ACCA, CIMA, ZICA).
Knowledge & Skills
The ideal candidate should demonstrate:
- Understanding of accounting principles and double-entry bookkeeping.
- Ability to prepare and interpret journal entries.
- Basic understanding of financial statements and accounting reports.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Excel and other Microsoft Office applications.
- Strong numerical and analytical skills.
- Attention to detail and accuracy.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of financial information.

Duration
Internship Period: 6–12 months (renewable based on performance).

Preferred Residence: Candidates must be residing in Chilanga, Kafue, or surrounding areas. Preference will be given to applicants based in these locations due to the operational requirements and ease of access to the workplace.
