Background
African Parks (AP) is a non-profit conservation organisation that takes on responsibility for the long-term management of protected areas in partnership with governments and local communities. AP manages 23 protected areas in 13 countries covering over 20 million hectares in Angola, Benin, Central African Republic, Chad, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Malawi, Mozambique, the Republic of Congo, South Sudan, Rwanda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
Job Overview
To provide support to the Workshop Manager in ensuring Liuwa Plain National Park applies the highest standards in Mechanical services in order to facilitate the implementation of the Conservation Strategy.
Duties and responsibilities:
- Inspect vehicles & motorcycles, Machines, engines, transmissions, etc. and run diagnostics to discover functionality issues
- Perform refurbishment operations (shock absorbers, tires, brake discs and pads, batteries, filters).
- Carry out repairs on vehicles and machines with the aim of maximum quality work.
- Resolve reported issues and resolve them in a timely manner.
- Perform general maintenance of vehicles, machinery, equipment and mechanical equipment like gensets and mechanized systems.
- Clean and apply lubricants to machine components.
- Open a job card for each vehicle once received in the workshop or machinery before working on it and close the job card upon completion of work.
- Provide advice on proper maintenance and preventive measures to machine and Vehicle user.
- Keep work logs and report problems to the senior on duty.
- And any other task at the request of the supervisor.
- Required Skills and Competencies
- Understanding of vehicle systems: engine, brakes, suspension, exhaust, etc.
- Ability to use hand tools, power tools, and basic diagnostic equipment safely and correctly
- Performing oil changes, tire rotations, brake pad replacements, and fluid checks.
- Supporting senior mechanics in disassembly, repair, and reassembly of vehicle components.
- Ability to understand service manuals, diagrams, and repair instructions.
- Carefully follows instructions and checks work to avoid mistakes
- Completes assigned tasks within the expected time frames.
- Works effectively with senior mechanics, supervisors, and other workshop staff.
- Open to feedback and actively develops technical knowledge through hands-on experience.
- Understands and follows workshop safety procedures (e.g., PPE, safe lifting).
- Keeps the work area tidy and tools properly stored
Role requirements
- A high school Certificate
- A diploma/certificate is preferred (CAP in automotive mechanics)
- Excellent knowledge of hydraulic, electrical and other engines, machines and systems.
- Ability to use various hand tools (screwdrivers, hammers, etc.) and precision measuring tools (e.g. calipers)
- Ability to follow established procedures and practices and read instructions, plans, etc.
- A strong commitment to all health and safety guidelines
- Registered Member of the Engineering Institution of Zambia (EIZ)
