Zambia Sugar Plc. is an ABF Group sugar company and is the leading sugar producer in Zambia. Its main activities are the growing of sugar cane, the production and marketing of sugar and other sugar downstream products.
The company invites applications from suitably qualified and experienced individuals to fill the following positions in the Corporate Affairs Department to be based at Nakambala.
1. INDUSTRY AFFAIRS MANAGER x 1 – PERMANENT
This position reports to the Corporate Affairs Director.
Key Responsibilities
• Develop strategies to proactively engage with relevant regulatory policy makers and ascertain the Company’s position on legislative and regulatory issues from senior management and business clients to influence productive long term business policy.
• Develop and implement strategies related to public affairs and industry policy, and ensure they uphold the Company’s corporate reputation.
• Promote proactive engagement with relevant regulatory policy makers to positively influence regulations for the benefit of the industry in a timely manner.
• Provide critical counsel, leadership and strategic action plans and communication input on regulatory and public affairs issues that could impact on corporate reputation.
• Research and analyze industry information and trends, market developments and regulatory changes, and provide advice to the executive leadership team.
• Formulate plans to effectively influence and advocate to top-level executives and government officials.
• Develop communications, advocate on behalf of the organization, and represent the Company at external engagements and industry associations.
• Monitor and report any external policy developments relevant to the industry.
• Anticipate potential problems facing the industry, developing initiatives that will address key stakeholder concerns.
• Engage with legal and other relevant teams to assess impact of identified issues, including engagements with focus on influencing change of regulations to benefit industry.
• Ascertain the Company’s position on legislative and regulatory issues from senior management and business clients.
• Promote strong linkages with the Apex business organizations (e.g. Zambia Association of Manufacturers (ZAM), Zambia Association of Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ZACCI), the sugar association, the sugar cane grower community, and the surrounding businesses.
• Ensure all Company registration certificates, permits and licenses are obtained and maintained as per government requirements.
• Promote and foster ABF’s interests, Zambia Sugar supply chain’s interests, the competitive space Zambia Sugar operates in, as well as its position within the broader ABF Sugar Group.
• Support the management of the Sugar Association secretariat by ensuring that information is available for the operationalization of the Sugar Association as secretariat.
• Support the engagements with stakeholder relations Manager and other stakeholder groups such as Outgrowers, their association with Fair Trade and manage good governance practices.
• Promote and adhere to Zambia Sugar’s procedures, policies, and guidelines, including, without limitation, those relating to SHERQ, Competition Law and Anti-Bribery and Corruption (ABC).
• Execute any other work that may be assigned to you by your supervisor from time to time.
Minimum Requirements
• Bachelor’s degree in economics, Agricultural Economics, Development Economics, Commerce, Business Administration, Law, Public Policy, Public Administration and similar.
• Master’s degree in relevant field will be an added advantage.
• Preferably 5-7 years’ experience in working with business/private sector, in areas of stakeholder engagement/ public relations and government relations.
• Experience of senior-level negotiations and conflict management.
• Excellent network of contacts with government, NGOs, private businesses.
• Recognized solid project management and interrelation skills.
• Experience in building and implementing strategy.
• Able to work under pressure and stay calm in crisis situation, able to work fast.
• Understanding of the legal and regulatory frameworks in trade and industry.
• Experience in effective networking, communicating and influencing, and advocating to top level executives, industry and government.
• Knowledge of trade blocks within the region, the continent and worldwide as well as various regional trade protocols.
• Suitably qualified applicants must provide certificates which have been verified by the Zambia Qualifications Authority (ZAQA).
