Our client is looking for seasoned personnel to fill the role of Declarant (Clearing & Forwarding Officer)
Job Purpose
The Declarant is responsible for preparing, processing, and lodging customs documentation to ensure the timely and compliant clearance of imports and exports in accordance with customs laws and regulations. The role ensures efficient cargo clearance, minimizes delays, and supports smooth logistics operations.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Customs Documentation & Declarations
- Prepare and submit accurate customs declarations for import, export, and transit consignments using the designated customs systems (e.g. ASYCUDA).
- Classify goods correctly using the Harmonized System (HS) codes and determine applicable duties, taxes, and levies.
- Verify shipping documents including invoices, packing lists, bills of lading/airway bills, and certificates of origin, permits, and licenses.
- Ensure compliance with customs valuation and origin rules.
Compliance & Regulatory Management
- Ensure all declarations comply with national customs laws, regulations, and procedures.
- Liaise with customs authorities, border agencies, and regulatory bodies to resolve queries, inspections, and audits.
- Stay updated on changes in customs regulations, tariffs, and trade procedures.
- Maintain proper records for audit and compliance purposes.
Cargo Clearance & Operations Support
- Coordinate with clearing officers, transporters, and warehouse teams to facilitate cargo release.
- Monitor clearance progress and proactively address issues that may cause delays or penalties.
- Support physical inspections, examinations, and customs queries when required.
- Ensure timely payment of customs duties, taxes, and related charges.
Client & Stakeholder Communication
- Communicate clearance requirements, documentation needs, and clearance status to clients.
- Provide professional advice to clients on customs procedures, duties, exemptions, and compliance matters.
- Resolve client issues related to customs clearance efficiently and professionally.
Reporting & Administration
- Prepare clearance status reports and exception reports for management.
- Maintain accurate electronic and physical filing systems for all declarations and supporting documents.
- Support internal audits and compliance reviews.
Qualifications & Experience
- Diploma in Customs Clearing, Logistics, Supply Chain Management, or a related field.
- Certified Customs Clearing qualification is an added advantage.
- Minimum 3 years’ experience in a clearing and forwarding environment.
- Proven experience using customs declaration systems (e.g. ASYCUDA).
