Pharmacist
Job Summary
The Pharmacist provides leadership in pharmaceutical services and medication management to ensure safe, effective, and uninterrupted delivery of medicines and related health commodities at AHF-supported facilities.
The role strengthens patient-centered pharmaceutical care, supply chain resilience, and pharmacovigilance systems, while supporting clinical teams to optimize treatment outcomes for people living with HIV and other chronic conditions.
The Pharmacist plays a critical role in advancing digital pharmacy systems, data-driven inventory management, and integrated pharmaceutical services aligned with national guidelines and AHF program priorities.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
Pharmaceutical Care and Clinical Pharmacy:
- Provide patient-centered pharmaceutical care to ensure safe and effective use of medicines.
- Review prescriptions to ensure accuracy, appropriateness, and adherence to national treatment guidelines.
- Provide medication counseling to patients to improve treatment adherence and therapeutic outcomes.
- Collaborate with clinicians to optimize treatment regimens and prevent drug-related problems.
- Support management of complex medication regimens including HIV, TB, and co-morbid conditions.
Digital Pharmacy Systems and Data Management:
- Promote use of electronic pharmacy and logistics management systems to strengthen commodity tracking and reporting.
- Support integration of pharmacy data with facility monitoring systems to improve program performance monitoring.
- Utilize routine pharmacy data to inform forecasting, supply planning, and quality improvement initiatives.
- Strengthen documentation and reporting systems for pharmaceutical services.
Pharmacovigilance and Medication Safety:
- Strengthen pharmacovigilance systems through routine monitoring and reporting of adverse drug reactions.
- Promote safe medication practices and medication error prevention strategies.
- Participate in clinical reviews to support safe and effective treatment outcomes.
Quality Improvement and Clinical Governance:
- Lead pharmacy-related quality improvement initiatives to enhance medication management and service delivery.
- Support routine clinical audits, stock audits, and pharmacy performance reviews.
- Strengthen compliance with national pharmaceutical regulations and AHF pharmacy standards.
Capacity Building and Team Collaboration:
- Provide mentorship and technical support to pharmacy technologists and dispensing staff.
- Collaborate with clinical teams to strengthen multidisciplinary patient care.
- Support training of healthcare workers on rational medicine use and medication safety.
Health Systems Strengthening:
- Support integration of pharmaceutical services with HIV, TB, STI, and chronic disease programs.
- Strengthen facility systems to support differentiated service delivery models and multi-month dispensing.
- Promote innovative approaches that improve patient access to medicines and treatment adherence.
Participation in AHF Meetings/Committees:
- Medical Staff Meetings.
- General Staff Meetings.
- Continuing Medical Education (CME) and Continuous Professional Development (CPD) activities.
- Facility Performance Review Meetings.
- Quality Improvement (QI) Meetings.
Qualifications:

A. Education and/or Experience:
- Must have a Full Grade 12 Certificate with five (5) O’ Levels.
- Must possess a Bachelor of Pharmacy (BPharm or equivalent) from a recognized institution.
- Minimum of three (3) years’ experience in pharmaceutical services, preferably within HIV programs or public health settings.
- Demonstrated knowledge of national pharmaceutical regulations, treatment guidelines, and good pharmacy practice standards.
- Knowledge in HIV prevention, care, and treatment management is an added advantage.
- Knowledge in pharmaceutical supply chain management and logistics systems is an added advantage.
- Experience in ARV supply chain management and chronic disease medicines is an added advantage.
- Experience working with electronic logistics management or pharmacy information systems is desirable.
- Must be registered with the Health Professions Council of Zambia (HPCZ) with a valid practicing license.
B. Computer Skills:
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Ability to use electronic pharmacy management systems and digital health tools.
- Ability to analyze routine pharmacy and commodity data
