Organizational Overview
African Parks is a non-profit conservation organisation that assumes full responsibility for the rehabilitation and long-term management of national parks in partnership with governments and local communities. The organisation currently manages 24 national parks and protected areas in 13 countries, covering over 20 million hectares across Africa, including significant landscapes in Zambia and Zimbabwe.
Position Summary
The Mechanical Technician is responsible for installing, maintaining, diagnosing, and repairing mechanical equipment and systems. The role ensures that machinery operates safely, efficiently, and with minimal downtime, supporting operational continuity in workshop and field environments.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
The Mechanical Technician will:
- Perform routine maintenance and servicing of mechanical equipment, vehicles, and
- Hands-on experience with Toyota Land Cruisers and demonstrated understanding of vehicle electrical systems will be an added advantage.
- Diagnose mechanical faults and carry out effective repairs
- Install and commission mechanical systems and components
- Conduct inspections and preventive maintenance according to schedules
- Maintain accurate service records and maintenance logs
- Ensure strict compliance with safety standards and workshop procedures
- Operate tools, diagnostic equipment, and workshop machinery safely
- Assist in parts ordering and inventory control
- Respond promptly to breakdowns and emergency repairs
- Keep the workshop clean, organized, and hazard-free
Minimum Qualifications and Experience
- Diploma or Certificate in Mechanical Engineering or related field
- Proven experience as a Mechanical Technician or similar role
- Hands-on experience with engines, generators, or industrial equipment (preferred)
- Basic computer literacy for reporting and documentation
Required Skills and Competencies
- Strong knowledge of mechanical systems and components
- Ability to read and interpret technical manuals and drawings
- Troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
- Proficiency in using mechanical tools and diagnostic equipment
- Attention to detail and safety awareness
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Good communication and reporting skills
- Time management and reliability
