The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH is the implementing agency of the Federal Republic of Germany for technical and international cooperation. It offers flexible, sustainable and effective solutions in political, economic and social change processes. Most of the work of GIZ is commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). GIZ also operates on behalf of other German ministries as well as public and private bodies in Germany and abroad. These include the European Commission, the United Nations, the World Bank and governments of other countries.
The IKI global project “Integrated Climate Services for Transformative Climate Action (CISTA)” works on improved climate services that combine weather, climate and sector data to make climate risk management more effective. In Guatemala, Pakistan and Zambia, CISTA supports the use of these services for climate and biodiversity policy by establishing governance frameworks and building technical capacities. Tools for disseminating climate information and for climate risk management are developed with communities and affected sectors, taking into account the specific needs of women and disadvantaged groups. The project is being implemented in partnership with the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). In Zambia, the project is closely working with the Zambia Meteorological Department and the Ministry of Green Economy and Environment.
In this context, the project is seeking a suitable candidate for the following position:
Advisor Climate Information Services (Salary Band 4) – based in Lusaka
REF: GIZ_IKI_CISA
Main tasks and responsibilities:
- Give advisory on climate services and its role in climate risk management (with a focus on agriculture) to government institutions such as Zambia Meteorological Department, Ministry of Green Economy and Environment, Disaster Mitigation and Management Unit and Ministry of Agriculture
- Identify and develop sectoral climate risk management entry points (e.g. (sector) NAPs, NBSAPs, NDC, etc.
- Promote and further develop climate/weather risk management tools such as E-PICSA
- Coordinate with government entities, civil society, private sector, academia and development partners
- Manage contract and grants relating to climate services and climate risk management
- Knowledge management, M&E and communication
- Assist the project manager with the management of project activities, including administrative and logistical processes
- When requested, support activities linked to the GIZ Agri-Food Cluster
Qualifications and Requirements:
- Bachelors degree in climate science, climate/disaster risk management, geography or comparable course of study
- Masters degree preferred
- Applicants are expected to have their academic certificates verified by Zambia Qualifications Authority (ZAQA).
Professional experience
- At least 5 years professional experience in climate advisory or climate/disaster risk management
- Minimum of 5 years work experience in collaborating with Zambian government institutions
- Experience in managing consultants/grants is desirable
Other knowledge and additional competences
- Good working knowledge of ICT (related software, email, the internet) and computer applications (MS Office, MS Teams)
- Fluency in English, both written and oral
- Strong interpersonal, communication and organizational skills and ability to work effectively in a multicultural and multidisciplinary team
- Ability to work responsibly, effectively and in a target-oriented manner under minimal supervision
The successful candidate will be expected to start employment with GIZ, on a fixed term contract.
