STRUCTURAL ENGINEER – METAL FABRICATION DIVISION

AMSI Zambia Ltd is seeking an experienced Structural Engineer to lead and grow our Metal Fabrication Division.
This is a senior, hands-on role for someone who can confidently interpret structural drawings, convert them into accurate cutting lists and quotations, and manage projects from initial enquiry through to successful delivery—all while leading and developing the engineering and fabrication team.
Just as importantly, we are looking for a creative, outside-the-box thinker: someone who can take a client’s idea or rough brief, develop it into a practical concept, and translate it into clear drawings and proposals that can be presented to the client with confidence.
Candidates should combine strong technical steelwork knowledge with design flair, commercial awareness, project management capability and the people skills required to run a busy division.
The Role
Reporting to the Operations Director through the General Manager, the successful candidate will take full ownership of the fabrication division’s engineering output.
Key responsibilities will include:
Turning client ideas and rough briefs into practical design concepts.
Developing concepts into clear drawings and proposals for client presentation.
Accurately interpreting structural and fabrication drawings and specifications.
Generating detailed cutting lists, material take-offs and bills of material from drawings.
Preparing accurate costings, quotations and tenders for fabrication projects.
Planning, scheduling and managing projects through to completion, on time and within budget.
Leading, mentoring and managing the engineering and fabrication team.
Liaising with clients, consultants and suppliers throughout each project.
Ensuring that workmanship, quality and safety standards are maintained across all projects.
Identifying opportunities to improve the division’s efficiency, output and profitability.
What We Are Looking For
A degree, diploma or equivalent qualification in Structural or Mechanical Engineering, or a strong track record in a comparable role.
Current registration with the Engineering Institution of Zambia (EIZ) is mandatory and must be clearly indicated in the application.
Five or more years’ experience in structural steel or metal fabrication, ideally in a supervisory or leadership capacity.
Creative, solution-focused thinking, with the ability to visualise a concept and translate it into drawings and proposals that clients can easily understand.
Confidence in reading and interpreting structural, fabrication and shop drawings.
Proven ability to produce cutting lists, material take-offs, costings and quotations.
A solid understanding of fabrication processes, materials and structural steel sections.
Strong project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
Leadership ability and the maturity to manage, mentor and develop a team.
Good commercial awareness and excellent attention to detail.
Proficiency in relevant engineering and drawing software, such as AutoCAD, Tekla or similar, will be an advantage.
