Position: Medical Officer
Location: Premium Medical Services Limited (PMSL) Lusaka
Reports to: Head Medical Services
Job Overview:
The
Medical Officer will be responsible for delivering high-quality medical care to patients, managing both routine and emergency medical conditions. You will play a key role in diagnosing and treating a wide range of illnesses, formulating treatment plans, and ensuring the delivery of top-tier healthcare services. Additionally, you will supervise, mentor, and train nursing staff to maintain high clinical standards and enhance patient care.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
A. Patient Care and Medical Management:
- Provide High-Standard Medical Care: Conduct comprehensive medical assessments, diagnose illnesses, and provide treatment to patients. Ensure care meets the highest clinical standards.
- Formulate Diagnoses and Treatment Plans: Competently diagnose medical conditions and develop effective treatment plans aimed at improving patient health, well-being, and quality of life.
- Manage Medical Conditions: Oversee the management of both acute and chronic medical conditions, including prescribing medications and interventions.
- Ward Rounds: Conduct daily ward rounds, monitor patient progress, review treatment plans, and adjust them as needed to ensure optimal care.
B. Supervision and Staff Development:
- Supervise and Teach Staff: Effectively supervise nursing and paramedical staff, providing ongoing teaching, guidance, and clinical skills development.
- Mentorship and Skill Transfer: Mentor junior staff by sharing knowledge and clinical insights to foster professional growth and enhance care standards.
- Collaboration with Healthcare Team: Work closely with doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to ensure an integrated approach to patient care.
C. Emergency and On-Call Duties:
- On-Call Obligations: Fulfill on-call duties promptly, managing medical emergencies and performing life-saving interventions as necessary.
- Emergency Response: Provide rapid decision-making and coordination with the healthcare team to manage critical patient situations effectively.
D. Patient Communication and Collaboration:
- Effective Communication with Patients: Establish trusting relationships with patients, offering clear explanations of diagnoses, treatment plans, and health education.
- Collaborate with Colleagues: Work collaboratively with the healthcare team to ensure a holistic and patient-centered approach to care.
- Patient Focus: Prioritize patient well-being by addressing their concerns promptly and compassionately.
E. Administrative and Documentation Responsibilities:
- Accurate Documentation: Ensure thorough documentation of patient interactions, diagnoses, treatments, and progress notes, adhering to hospital protocols and legal requirements.
- Reporting and Handover: Provide comprehensive monthly reports to oncoming medical staff to ensure continuity of care for patients.
Any Other Lawful Responsibilities: Carry out any other duties assigned by management to support the efficient operation of the facility and enhance patient care.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Medicine and Surgery (MBChB/MBBS) or equivalent.
Postgraduate qualification in Public Health, Health Management, or related field is an added advantage. Valid practicing license with the Health Professions Council of Zambia (HPCZ) Certification in leadership, hospital management, or healthcare administration is an added advantage.
Experience
- 5 - 8 years’ post-qualification experience - senior hospital management or clinical leadership role will be an added advantage.
- Proven experience in hospital operations management, including patient care, staff supervision, and departmental coordination.
- Experience in HR processes such as disciplinary management.
Strong background in clinical governance, compliance, and quality assurance.
- Experience in budget management, report writing, procurement of medical supplies, and pharmaceutical oversight.
- Evidence of involvement in staff training, mentoring, and capacity-building initiatives.
Knowledge & Skills
- In-depth knowledge of hospital operations, clinical protocols, and healthcare systems.
- Excellent leadership and people-management skills, with ability to motivate and inspire teams.
- Strong decision-making, problem-solving, and conflict-resolution abilities.
Good financial acumen and ability to manage budgets effectively.
- Strong negotiation, networking, and relationship-building skills with medical peers, suppliers, and stakeholders.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills (written and verbal).
- Proficiency in healthcare information systems and basic IT tools (MS Office, hospital management software).
