About the Role
We are seeking committed, technically minded volunteers (or interns) to serve as Civil & Environmental Projects Assistants within our field research and monitoring project. This role supports multidisciplinary assessments involving environmental sampling, infrastructure observations, and community-level environmental risk documentation in industrial and mining-affected areas.
The position is ideal for final-year students or recent graduates in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Water Resources, Geotechnical Engineering, Sustainability Studies or related disciplines who wish to build practical experience in applied environmental monitoring, field investigations, and engineering support activities.
This role offers a unique opportunity to gain experience across both civil and environmental disciplines, contributing to baseline surveys, community environmental monitoring, and technical data collection that informs research, environmental restoration, and infrastructure planning.
Key Responsibilities
Environmental Fieldwork
- Assist in the collection, labeling, preservation, and secure transport of soil, water, and sediment samples following approved environmental sampling protocols.
- Conduct in-situ water quality measurements (pH, turbidity, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, temperature) using portable field meters.
- Record environmental indicators such as pollution presence, erosion, drainage patterns, and ecosystem disturbances.
Civil/Infrastructure Assessment Support
- Support field observations related to stormwater systems, culverts, drainage channels, roads, erosion hotspots, and structural vulnerabilities in affected communities.
- Assist in documenting infrastructure defects that influence environmental risk or contamination pathways.
- Participate in infrastructure condition assessments under guidance from engineers or senior project supervisors.
Data Management & Technical Documentation
- Accurately record field measurements, GPS coordinates, site descriptions, and sampling metadata.
- Input, clean, and validate data in Excel or approved digital platforms.
- Prepare concise technical notes, field summaries, and observation sheets for integration into civil and environmental engineering reports.
Safety, Compliance & Professional Conduct
- Follow all PPE requirements, site-specific safety instructions, and environmental health protocols.
- Adhere to safe handling of sampling tools, testing kits, and field equipment.
- Conduct all field activities ethically, respectfully, and with full confidentiality
Collaboration & Technical Learning
- Participate in pre-field planning, daily briefings, and debrief sessions with civil and environmental teams.
- Contribute to discussions on site conditions, sampling quality, infrastructure-environment interactions, and risk assessment.
Required Qualifications & Skills
- Enrolled in or recently completed a diploma or degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Water Resources, Geology, Geotechnical Engineering, Sustainability, or a related technical discipline.
- Foundational knowledge of environmental sampling, hydrology, or basic civil infrastructure systems is an added advantage.
- Ability to work professionally in outdoor, industrial, rural, and community field conditions.
- Strong observational, analytical, and documentation skills with high attention to detail.
- Proficiency in technical software (any of the following is an advantage):
- ArcGIS / QGIS (mapping, spatial analysis, GPS data integration)
- AutoCAD / Civil 3D (basic drawings, drafting, field sketch conversion)
- Google Earth Pro (site mapping and geolocation)
- Excel (mandatory) – data entry, cleaning, basic analysis
- EIA / SIA exposure (Environmental Impact Assessment, Social Impact Assessment)
- Basic Quantity Surveying principles (measurements, field quantities, bill items)
- Project management tools (Trello, Notion or similar – optional)
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
- High commitment to professional ethics, safety, confidentiality, and data integrity.
- Possession of a valid driver’s license will be considered a significant advantage.
Benefits
- Gain structured technical experience across civil engineering, environmental monitoring, sampling, spatial mapping, infrastructure assessment, and field-based research.
- Work alongside civil engineers, environmental scientists, geotechnical specialists, and data professionals.
- Build practical competencies in GIS, field sampling, infrastructure documentation, and engineering reporting.
- Transport and meal allowances provided for all approved field assignments.
- Receive a Certificate of Completion and a professional recommendation letter upon successful participation.
- Outstanding performers may be considered for transition into a full-time project role upon contract completion, subject to performance, funding availability, and organizational needs.
- Exposure to nationally and internationally relevant environmental datasets, engineering methods, and restoration initiatives.
Contract Duration
6 Months Part-Time / Hybrid / (Remote - Office & Field-Based)
Hours vary depending on field schedules, project timelines, and data reporting cycles.
Application deadline: Friday 12th December 2025
