Purpose
Family Legacy (FL) is a faith-based organization that exists to glorify God by equipping children in Zambia to live out their God-given potential. Since 2000, Family Legacy Missions Zambia (FLMZ) has been transforming the lives of vulnerable and orphaned children through three core programs: Camp Life, the Tree of Life Children’s Village, and the Legacy Academies using for key pillars of our ministry – academic, emotional, spiritual and physical.
The overall responsibility of the Secondary School Teacher is to impart knowledge and skills into the learners and implement scheduled and unscheduled learning activities in line with the organization’s policy on education. Monitor the conduct and discipline of learners and create an environment which will enable students to fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, spiritual and psychological development. The Secondary school Teacher should promote interests of stakeholders who are the learners and caretakers.
Child Safeguarding
Family Legacy Missions Zambia is committed to the highest standards of child safeguarding and the protection of vulnerable individuals. We maintain a zero-tolerance policy for all forms of abuse, exploitation, or harm. Safeguarding is an act of discipleship. Protecting the physical, emotional, spiritual, and psychological wellbeing of children reflects God’s heart for justice, dignity, and restoration. All staff are stewards of trust and are called to create environments where children are safe, heard, and able to reach their God-given potential.
All staff have a duty to uphold the organization's Child Safeguarding Policy, including mandatory reporting of any concerns or disclosures, active participation in training, and commitment to safe behavior inside and outside the workplace.
Core Safeguarding Responsibilities:
- Always promote the safety and wellbeing of children in all organizational activities.
- Report any suspicion, disclosure, or evidence of abuse within 24 hours to immediate supervisor or designated Safeguarding Focal Point.
- Report concerns in good faith without fear of retaliation, including concerns involving colleagues or supervisors, using approved reporting and whistleblowing channels.
- Cooperate fully with authorities including Police Victim Support Unit (VSU) or Ministry of Community Development and Social Welfare when cases arise.
- Always uphold professional boundaries and follow the Code of Conduct for Working with Children.
- Complete mandatory annual safeguarding training and demonstrate understanding of reporting procedures.
- Maintaining confidentiality while ensuring child safety is never compromised.
- Model respectful, appropriate behavior in all interactions with children and families.
- Challenge unsafe practices or concerning behaviors observed in colleagues.
Roles and Responsibilities
1. Students Management (20%)
- Oversee and manage students in assigned classes regarding classroom instruction.
- Listen to students’ concerns and needs and provide feedback at an appropriate time to both the supervisor and learners.
- Track attendance of students.
- Locally initiate mediation in conflict management among students.
- Advocate and ensure safety of students when reporting child protection or other sensitive issues.
- Ensure the concerns and needs of the students are attended to so that their work is not disrupted.
- Maintain a comprehensive continuous assessment record on academic performance of students. This will be done through consistent monthly tests and School-Based Assessments.
- Sensitize students on the prudent use of class resources and materials. Teach students to show gratitude to their sponsors.
2. Safeguarding (15%)
- Provide emotionally safe, affirming learning spaces for struggling learners.
- Monitor signs of distress, shame, or withdrawal during interventions.
- Maintain daily awareness of learners’ emotional, behavioral, and physical wellbeing.
- Maintain daily vigilance for signs of abuse, neglect, distress, or behavioral changes in children.
- Respond calmly and appropriately to student disclosures.
- Document and report concerns the same working day.
- Document and report any concerning observations, disclosures, or incidents to supervisor within same working day.
- Keep accurate attendance and wellbeing logs as required by position (e.g., classroom registers.
- Follow one-on-one interaction protocols including visibility requirements and documentation procedures.
- Ensure physical contact with children is appropriate, minimal, and in line with organizational guidelines.
- Never be alone with a child in isolated or private spaces without visibility or another adult present.
- Maintain professional boundaries including no private social media contact, personal phone communication, or gifts without supervisor approval.
- Participate in trauma-informed care training and apply principles in daily interactions.
- Recognize and appropriately respond to disclosures of abuse following organizational protocols.
- Submit to annual background verification renewal and maintain current clearances.
- Notify supervisor immediately if facing personal circumstances that could impair judgment or child safety.
- Adhere to digital safeguarding standards, including appropriate use of ICT, protection of child data, and compliance with consent and photography guidelines.
3. Leadership (10%)
- Engage in decision making in consultation with supervisors.
- Create a school culture that promotes good values among learners as required by the organizations policies.
- Provide encouragement to students through affirmation and other incentives where possible.
- Provide suggestions to supervisors about appropriate solutions to problems that threaten smooth implementation of academic activities at a campus.
- Be a role model to all students in a holistic manner.
4. Lesson Delivery (20%)
- Use schemes of work based on the new revised curriculum and produce a detailed lesson plan that promotes effective teaching.
- Model to students the use of the spoken English language in and outside class for effective learning and communication.
- Implement skills learnt during workshops and training organized by the organization and external bodies.
- Design and implement appropriate interventions to improve the performance of struggling students in various subjects.
- Submit lesson plans weekly and schemes of work at the start of the term to the supervisor.
- Ensure the school syllabus is completed for each year.
- Implement Social Emotional Learning initiatives in the school environment.
- Promote Christian values in the school in line with the organizations statement of faith.
- Administering of Term letters in collaboration with Social Services Department.
5. Student Discipline (10%)
- Enforce the student code of conduct.
- Handle and document student disciplinary and grievance cases according to the code of conduct.
- Document learner cases of indiscipline for reference and decision making.
- Hold students accountable for failure to follow laid down school rules. This will be done using the Student Code of Conduct.
6. Time Management (5%)
- When on duty, ensure students report for school on time, begin scheduled learning activities on time, break, assembly, lunch and dismissal are conducted accordingly to scheduled times.
- Arrive at least 30 minutes before students arrive, maintain attendance roster on each school day to monitor reporting time.
7. School Environment and Maintenance (5%)
- Ensure assigned classrooms are kept clean at all times.
- Create and keep an inventory for all class items/ supplies assigned.
8. Communication (5%)
- Follow the laid down channels of communication with the Head and all other staff.
- Promptly communicate and document important information to the supervisor.
9. Classroom Security (5%)
- Ensure that the assigned classroom is locked at the end of each school day and submit the keys to the supervisor.
- Ensure students are not left unsupervised.
10. Records Management (5%)
- Document and maintain an up-to-date Teacher Binder.
- The binder will contain records for the following data:
- A comprehensive class student list encompassing guardians/parents and their contact details
- Student Attendance List
- Behavior Log
- Lesson plan
- Schemes of Work
- School Curriculum
- Records Report
- Incident Reports
- Mark Schedule
- Any other forms deemed necessary by the FLMZ office.
11. Exams(5%)
- Administer locally set tests.
- Invigilate national examinations.
- Provide credible and accurate information on learners as requested by the Head teacher and Examination and curriculum Coordinator.
Qualifications
Education:
- Grade 12 Certificate.
- Secondary School Teacher Degree in Education.
- Valid TCZ Certificate.
Experience:
- At least 2 years teaching experience.
Skills and Competencies:
- Excellent command of oral and written English.
- Competency in computer skills (MS Word, Excel)
- Strong communication and presentation skills, both verbal and written.
- Proven ability to work cross-culturally and in faith-based environments.
- Must be a Christian and committed to Christian values, servant leadership, and Family Legacy’s mission
- High levels of integrity, accountability, and professionalism.
