About the Role
Our client is looking for a competent, detail-oriented and organised Assistant Accountant to support the Finance Department in maintaining accurate financial records and ensuring effective financial controls. The successful candidate will be responsible for supporting day-to-day accounting activities, performing financial reconciliations, monitoring receivables and payables, supporting stock verification, and assisting with tax compliance requirements.
The Assistant Accountant will work closely with the Finance Manager, Sales Representatives and other departments to ensure that financial information is accurate, complete and available on a timely basis.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform accurate and timely data entry into the accounting system.
- Conduct sales reconciliations with Sales Representatives and investigate discrepancies.
- Perform trade debt and staff debt reconciliations and prepare relevant reports.
- Conduct weekly stock verification and carry out spot stock checks as required.
- Perform bank reconciliations and investigate and resolve discrepancies.
- Reconcile petty cash expenses and ensure that appropriate supporting documentation is maintained.
- Perform accounts receivable reconciliations and monitor outstanding balances.
- Perform accounts payable reconciliations and ensure supplier records are accurate and up to date.
- Assist with the preparation of financial schedules and reports as required.
- Prepare and compile supporting documentation for monthly, quarterly and annual tax filings.
- Assist with month-end and year-end accounting activities.
- Maintain accurate, complete and properly organised financial records.
- Identify and report accounting discrepancies, variances or irregularities to the Finance Manager.
- Assist in ensuring compliance with company accounting policies, procedures and internal controls.
- Support the Finance Manager with other accounting and finance-related activities as required.
- Maintain confidentiality and integrity of financial information at all times.
- Perform any other accounting and finance-related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications & Experience
- Grade 12 Certificate.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance or a related field.
- Professional accounting qualification such as ZICA, ACCA or CIMA is required or an added advantage.
- 2–3 years of relevant experience in accounting or finance.
- Paid-up membership with ZICA.
- Good understanding of fundamental accounting principles and practices.
- Experience in bank, receivables, payables, sales and petty cash reconciliations.
- Experience with stock verification or stock control will be an advantage.
- Experience using accounting software or accounting packages.
- Good working knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- High level of accuracy and attention to detail.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality and professional integrity.
- Good time management skills and ability to meet deadlines.
- Ability to work independently while also functioning effectively as part of a team.
- Self-motivated, ethical and able to work with minimal supervision.
