Purpose of the Role
The Instrumentation Expert is responsible for advanced installation, calibration, maintenance, and troubleshooting of instrumentation and control systems on the Lumwana Expansion Project. This role ensures all instrumentation equipment is installed, commissioned, and maintained in compliance with project specifications, international standards, and Zambian statutory requirements, thereby supporting safe, reliable, and efficient mining operations.
Minimum Requirements
- Trade Certification & Professional Standing
Recognised trade certificate or diploma in Instrumentation/Control Systems
Certification or training aligned with South African or internationally recognised artisan standards preferred
Valid trade qualification under the Skills Development Act (Section 13 or 26D) or equivalent
- Experience
Minimum of 5 years’ post-trade experience in instrumentation installation, calibration, and maintenance within mining, industrial, or large-scale infrastructure projects
Strong practical knowledge of instrumentation devices including transmitters, analyzers, flowmeters, pressure/temperature sensors, and control valves
Experience with PLCs, DCS systems, and smart instrumentation troubleshooting preferred
Key Responsibilities
Perform installation, calibration, testing, and maintenance of field instrumentation and control devices in line with project drawings, specifications, and international standards (IEC, ISA)
Carry out preventive maintenance, fault-finding, and repairs to minimise downtime of instrumentation systems
Accurately interpret P&IDs, loop diagrams, wiring diagrams, and datasheets for instrumentation works
Configure, program, and troubleshoot PLCs, DCS, and related automation systems in collaboration with control engineers
Ensure compliance with South African and Zambian safety legislation, NBCEI conditions (if applicable), and project HSE standards
Prepare detailed reports and maintain accurate records of calibration, maintenance, and inspections for audit and compliance purposes
Provide technical guidance, mentoring, and on-the-job training to junior technicians and assistants
Collaborate with electrical, mechanical, and automation teams to ensure effective system integration and commissioning
Participate in toolbox talks, risk assessments, and safety inductions, ensuring strict PPE use and adherence to safety procedures
Skills & Competencies
Advanced knowledge of instrumentation devices, control systems, calibration techniques, and SANS standards for instrumentation and electrical works
Skilled in the use of calibration/test equipment, diagnostic tools, and safety procedures
Ability to interpret and apply technical documentation including P&IDs, loop drawings, and technical datasheets
Strong fault-finding, analytical, and problem-solving skills
Effective communication, coordination, and teamwork abilities
Commitment to maintaining high standards of safety, quality, and technical accuracy
Working Conditions
Work may involve exposure to heights, confined spaces, and challenging environmental conditions
Strict compliance with PPE use and all company/project HSE regulations is mandatory
