Key/Main responsibility areas
To Coordinate the daily operations during a shift and ensure maximum plant efficiency and quality while carefully observing safety at all times.
· Ensuring SOP for boiler operation is followed by the operator on duty.
· Monitoring boiler operations, including fuel feed, draft openings, water level, and steam pressure.
· Operating air compressors, vacuum pumps, fire suppression systems, pumps, and cooling towers.
· Carrying out preventative and predictive maintenance techniques and equipment rebuilds/repairs.
· Ensuring continuous operations of steam boilers.
· Performing water quality testing for boiler and infeed water.
· Operating and troubleshooting utility, mechanical, and electrical systems with minimal production downtime.
· Assisting with machine operations and ensuring smooth steam supply.
· Conducting safety tests, boiler hydro-testing, and shift problem resolution.
· Delivering performance reports and maintaining accurate records for operations and repairs.
· Operating water softener and RO and monitoring water parameters.
· Adding chemicals when water parameters are out of the specified range.
· Preparing operational and security activity reports.
· Monitoring and adjusting steam pressure to the plants.
· Performing advanced casualty control procedures and routine operations with minimal supervision.
· Reading pressure gauges and ensuring boiler efficiency.
· Checking boiler safety shutdown equipment and isolating/tagging equipment for maintenance.
· Maintaining up-to-date knowledge of mechanical equipment and related maintenance.
Additional Responsibilities:
· RO Operation with Softener
· Daily inspection and monitoring of RO system performance and membrane integrity.
· Ensuring softener regeneration cycles are correctly timed and recorded.
· Regular backwashing of softener and checking salt levels in brine tank.
· Maintaining chemical dosing systems in RO pre-treatment.
· Sampling water at various stages (raw, softener outlet, RO permeate) and recording TDS, pH, hardness, and chlorine.
· Coordinating with chemical suppliers for correct chemical usage and storage.
· Troubleshooting and resolving RO system alarms, pressure drop issues, or fouling/scaling signs.
· Maintaining detailed logs of all RO and softener operational parameters, including downtime and chemical consumption.
Responsibilities for 1×20 TPH Travelling Grate Boiler:
· Monitoring of furnace bed temperature and controlling fuel feed to maintain optimal combustion.
· Regular ash removal and inspection of grate condition for smooth fuel movement.
· Checking and adjusting secondary and overfire air supply for complete combustion.
· Monitoring of economizer and air preheater for fouling and cleaning schedule adherence.
· Ensuring timely soot blowing operations to maintain heat transfer efficiency.
· Supervising fuel handling system from yard to bunker including conveyors and elevators.
· Reviewing hourly steam generation, fuel consumption, and combustion efficiency logs.
· Checking ID/FD fan operations and dampers positioning.
· Recording and analyzing flue gas parameters for combustion optimization.
· Carrying out start-up and shutdown procedures as per OEM guidelines.
Qualifications
· Diploma or Certificate in Chemical/Mechanical Engineering
Experience
· At least 2 years’ experience

· Member of the Engineering Institute of Zambia(EIZ)
