VACANCY: PLANT OPERATOR
Location: Kafue National Park
Reporting to: Roads Manager
Contract: Fixed Term (6 Months)

African Parks is a non-profit conservation organization that manages national parks in partnership with governments and local communities. We currently manage 24 protected areas across 13 African countries, including Zambia.
Job Purpose
The Plant Operator will safely and efficiently operate heavy equipment, including a front-end loader and motor grader, to support road maintenance, site development, and other park operations while complying with safety and environmental standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate front-end loaders and motor graders safely and efficiently.
- Carry out road grading, maintenance, and site preparation.
- Load, transport, and spread materials as required.
- Conduct daily equipment inspections before and after use.
- Perform basic maintenance checks and report any faults.
- Maintain equipment logbooks, including fuel usage and operating hours.
- Follow African Parks' Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Adhere to all health, safety, and environmental (HSE) requirements.
- Wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times.
- Report hazards, incidents, and equipment breakdowns promptly.
- Carry out any other duties assigned by the Roads Manager or Supervisor.
Minimum Qualifications and Experience
- Grade 12 Certificate.
- Valid Heavy Equipment Operator Certificate.
- Valid Driver's Licence (preferred).
- Minimum of 3–5 years' experience operating:
- Front-end Loaders
- Motor Graders
- Experience in construction, mining, landfill operations, or protected area operations will be an added advantage.
Skills and Competencies
- Good heavy equipment operating skills.
- Basic mechanical knowledge.
- Knowledge of grading and material handling techniques.
- Strong commitment to safety.
- Good communication and teamwork skills.
- Ability to work in demanding outdoor environments.
Working Conditions
- Outdoor work in varying weather conditions.
- Exposure to dust and noise.
- May be required to work weekends and public holidays.
- Physically demanding role.
