Main purpose of job
The Laboratory Technologist is responsible for performing a wide range of chemical, hematological, immunologic, and microbiological diagnostic tests. This role involves the operation of advanced automated equipment, meticulous data entry into the Hospital Management System, and ensuring that lab results are administered within realistic and communicated timeframes.
Main responsibilities
1. Set up scientific apparatus and prepare laboratory for experimental, demonstration or other purposes.
2. Carry out routine testing in accordance with instructions, using
specialized scientific equipment.
3. Prepare and analyze fluids, secretions and/or tissue to detect
infections or to examine the effects of different drugs.
4. Grow and prepare cultures of bacteria and viruses, tissue sections
and other organic and inorganic material and fix slides for examination
by microscope and other processes.
5. Carry out prescribed measurements and analyses and ensure that
sterile conditions necessary for some equipment are maintained.
6. Record and collate data from experimental work and document
all work carried out.
7. Observe all requirements to maintain a safe and healthy working
environment.
Knowledge, skills and experience required
- Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in Biomedical Sciences or Medical Laboratory Technology.
- Registration & Licensing:
- Full registration and a valid 2026 practicing license from the Health Professions Council of Zambia (HPCZ).
- Experience:
- A minimum of 1–2 years of clinical experience in a busy hospital laboratory.
