Job Title:
Laboratory Technologist
Job Summary:
The Laboratory Technologist provides high-quality diagnostic laboratory services to support patient care and program performance at AHF-supported health facilities.
The role ensures accurate, timely, and reliable laboratory testing while strengthening laboratory quality management systems, digital laboratory reporting, and integrated diagnostic services for HIV, TB, STIs, and other priority diseases.
The Laboratory Technologist contributes to laboratory data reporting, specimen referral networks, and continuous quality improvement, ensuring laboratory services support clinical decision-making and improved patient outcomes.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Diagnostic Services and Laboratory Operations:
- Perform laboratory testing procedures in accordance with approved laboratory protocols, national guidelines, and quality standards.
- Conduct diagnostic testing supporting HIV services, including HIV rapid testing, viral load monitoring, and related laboratory investigations.
- Support laboratory services for TB, STI, and other infectious disease diagnostics.
- Ensure timely processing of patient samples and accurate release of laboratory results to support clinical care.
- Maintain proper documentation of laboratory results in laboratory registers and digital systems.
Laboratory Quality Management:
- Implement and adhere to Laboratory Quality Management Systems (LQMS) and quality assurance procedures.
- Conduct routine internal quality control checks to ensure accuracy and reliability of test results.
- Participate in external quality assurance programs and proficiency testing schemes.
- Support implementation of continuous quality improvement initiatives within the laboratory.
Specimen Management and Referral Systems:
- Ensure proper collection, labeling, handling, and storage of patient specimens.
- Strengthen specimen referral systems to ensure timely transport of samples to reference laboratories when required.
- Monitor specimen integrity and compliance with specimen handling protocols.
Laboratory Equipment and Infrastructure:
- Operate laboratory equipment according to manufacturer guidelines and standard operating procedures.
- Support routine equipment maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting.
- Maintain equipment logs and ensure equipment functionality for uninterrupted laboratory services.
Laboratory Supply Chain and Commodity Management:
- Monitor laboratory reagent and consumable stocks to ensure availability of supplies.
- Support inventory management, stock documentation, and commodity tracking.
- Report stock status and support forecasting of laboratory supplies.
Digital Laboratory Systems and Data Reporting:
- Ensure proper use of Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) and electronic reporting tools where available.
- Maintain accurate laboratory data records and support reporting of laboratory indicators.
- Support facility teams in utilizing laboratory data to improve patient care and program performance.
Biosafety and Infection Prevention:
- Ensure strict adherence to biosafety and infection prevention protocols within the laboratory environment.
- Maintain proper use of personal protective equipment and laboratory safety procedures.
- Ensure safe disposal of laboratory waste and biohazard materials.
Collaboration and Program Support:
- Work closely with clinicians, nurses, and other healthcare providers to support effective patient care.
- Participate in facility-level quality improvement activities and program performance reviews.
- Support implementation of integrated diagnostic services aligned with AHF clinical priorities.
Participation in AHF Meetings/Committees:
- Medical Staff Meetings.
- General Staff Meetings.
- Continuing Medical Education (CME) activities.
- Laboratory Quality Review Meetings.
- Quality Improvement (QI) Meetings.
Qualifications:

A. Education and/or Experience:
- Must have a Full Grade 12 Certificate with five (5) O’ Levels.
- Diploma in Biomedical Sciences or Medical Laboratory Sciences from a recognized institution is required.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Biomedical Sciences or Medical Laboratory Sciences from a recognized institution is an added advantage.
- Minimum 2 years’ experience in a clinical laboratory setting.
- Knowledge of HIV diagnostic services and laboratory testing procedures is an added advantage.
- Knowledge of laboratory quality assurance systems and accreditation standards is desirable.
- Registered with the Health Professions Council of Zambia (HPCZ) with a valid practicing license.
B. Technical and Analytical Skills:
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
- Ability to operate laboratory equipment and diagnostic platforms.
- Basic knowledge of Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) or electronic laboratory reporting tools.
- Ability to maintain accurate laboratory records and reports environments.
